Mahama Criticizes NPP for Failed Promises, Urges Electorate to Vote Wisely

Former President John Dramani Mahama, NDC Flagbearer

As part of his tour in the North East Region, former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), strongly criticized the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging Ghanaians to assess their current living conditions and vote wisely in the upcoming December 2024 elections.

Addressing an enthusiastic crowd, former President Mahama emphasized that the NPP’s failure to deliver on key campaign promises had worsened the economic conditions for all Ghanaians, irrespective of their ethnic backgrounds.

The National Democratic Congress flagbearer and leader began by reminding the electorate of the NPP’s lofty promises during the 2016 elections, including the One District, One Factory initiative, One Village, One Dam policy, and the pledge to allocate $1 million per constituency annually.

“Our brothers came with sweet promises, and so Ghanaians naturally decided that they would give them an opportunity, which they did. Unfortunately, that opportunity, I think, has been squandered.”

Former President John Dramani Mahama, NDC Flagbearer

He lamented that instead of fulfilling their promises, the current administration had plunged the nation into deeper economic hardship.

According to the former president, the suffering that Ghanaians are experiencing today transcends ethnic lines, with every citizen feeling the brunt of the crisis,

“The suffering does not know any ethnic groups. Now Mamprusis are suffering as much as Ashantis. Ashantis are suffering as much as Ewes. Ewes are suffering as much as Fantis. Fantis are suffering as much as Dagatis”.

Soaring Prices of Basic Goods

In a pointed jab at President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former President Mahama highlighted the soaring prices of basic goods such as cement.

He recalled that under his NDC administration, a bag of cement cost GHS 24.00, whereas today, under the NPP, the price had skyrocketed to GHS 110.00.

“It wouldn’t say because you are Akufo-Addo’s brother or Bawumia’s brother or you are NPP, you will buy cement at a different price. If the cement has gone from GHS 24.00 when it was in NDC, and today is GHS 110.00, you’re also going to buy that cement at GHS 110.00.”

Former President John Dramani Mahama, NDC Flagbearer

In a fervent call to action, Former President John Dramani Mahama urged the electorate to reflect deeply on their lives and the economic conditions under the current government when they cast their ballots in the 2024 general elections.

He echoed the words of former President John Agyekum Kufuor and urged Ghanaians to vote in the December 7 2024 general elections bearing in mind their economic conditions.

“What we need to ask ourselves when we go to the ballot box on 7th December is what President Kufuor once said: look at your life and find out if your life has progressed or it has rather gone back. And if it has gone back, then vote wisely.”

This call for introspection comes as former President Mahama continues to court support from voters across the country, building his campaign on the NPP’s perceived failure to meet its promises and the resultant economic difficulties affecting ordinary Ghanaians.

With the December 2024 elections fast approaching, the NDC 2024 Presidential Candidate’s message of economic hardship and broken promises could resonate strongly with a population grappling with rising prices, unemployment, and a depreciating currency.

His tour of the Northeast Region is part of his broader campaign efforts to galvanize support for the NDC, positioning himself as the leader who can steer Ghana back onto a path of economic recovery.

His remarks reflect his strategy of contrasting the NDC’s tenure with that of the NPP, framing the election as a referendum on the current administration’s handling of the economy.
