NPP Accuses Organised Labour of Politically Motivated Activism

In a political twist ahead of Ghana’s crucial 2024 elections, the national youth wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused organised labour of aligning its recent activities with the electoral strategy of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a statement signed by the NPP’s National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, the NPP claimed that organised labour’s recent actions, including calls for a national strike and vocal opposition to illegal mining (galamsey), are politically motivated, forming part of a broader agenda to influence the forthcoming general elections.

“It is becoming increasingly evident that organised labour is following this politically motivated plan,” the NPP’s statement read. The youth wing questioned the sudden shift in tone, suggesting that organised labour’s silence on galamsey over the past few years casts doubt on their current stance.

“This newfound activism comes on issues they have largely been silent on for years. It is highly questionable that they have only found their voice with two months to go before the election.”

Salam Mustapha, NPP’s National Youth Organiser

According to the NPP, its concerns are based on a leaked confidential document titled “Winning 2024 and Beyond,” allegedly prepared by the NDC in 2021.

The document, reportedly brought to the NPP’s attention in December 2022, outlines a comprehensive strategy aimed at securing victory for the NDC in the 2024 elections.

The NPP believes that the recent activities of organised labour, particularly their vocal criticism of the government’s handling of illegal mining, are directly linked to this electoral strategy.

Mustapha pointed to the timing of their newfound activism on galamsey, noting that labour groups had remained relatively silent on the issue for years, only to speak out two months before the elections.

The NPP believes the sudden outcry is an orchestrated attempt to undermine the ruling government in the run-up to the elections, and not a genuine concern for the pressing issue of illegal mining.

The youth wing’s statement went on to accuse organised labour of selectively amplifying concerns over galamsey for political gain, claiming it is part of a broader NDC scheme to destabilize the government.

The NPP’s youth wing was keen to highlight the government’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining over the past years.

“The government has made considerable efforts over the last seven years to tackle illegal mining, taking decisive actions to safeguard our environment and the future of our natural resources,” the statement stressed, expressing dismay that organised labour had not acknowledged these initiatives.

Mustapha also underscored the government’s attempts to engage organised labour in discussions on various issues, including concerns over the impact of galamsey on the economy and environment.

He accused the unions of disregarding the significant concessions made by the government in recent talks with President Nana Akufo-Addo, suggesting that their unwillingness to cooperate points to a politically charged agenda.

In response to the escalating tensions, the NPP youth wing called on Ghanaians and union members to reject any attempts to politicize the fight against illegal mining.

“This is a national issue that transcends party politics. The future of our environment, livelihoods, and communities depends on us coming together to fight illegal mining as one united front.”

The party’s youth wing also warned against the use of galamsey as a campaign issue, highlighting that it is a national problem that requires collective action from all sectors of society, regardless of political affiliation.

“Let us put the interests of Ghana first and stop using galamsey as a political tool,” Mustapha implored.

The accusations leveled by the NPP’s youth wing against organised labour highlight the growing tension between the ruling government and key civil society groups, raising concerns over the politicization of critical national issues like illegal mining.
