NDC Criticizes Akufo- Addo Bawumia Government Over High Cost of Living

Louisa Kwakye Memeber of NDC Communications Team

The member of the NDC Communications Team Madam Louisa Kwakye passionately addressed the economic challenges facing Ghanaians under the current NPP government.

She touched on issues ranging from the unreliability of utilities to the rising cost of living, and she also shared her thoughts on issues related to healthcare in Ghana.

Madam Kwakye’s critique highlighted many Ghanaians’ frustrations regarding the high cost of living and the failures of the country’s social services.

Rising Cost of Living and Utility Challenges

She opened her statement by lamenting the difficulties of everyday life under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s leadership. She criticized how utility services, particularly electricity, have become increasingly unreliable and costly.

According to her, the government’s utilities management has left many Ghanaians questioning whether they are being overcharged or manipulated. She vividly described a situation many Ghanaians can relate to.

“You get home and realize the prepaid you bought over the period that you know the time frame is supposed to last you get back home and your lights are off. So, the question I ask myself is, what is happening to our utilities?”

Madam Louisa Kwakye’s sentiments resonate with many who have experienced similar frustrations with the electricity service. She further questioned whether utility companies are adjusting meters to make customers pay more than they should.

“They increased the tariff about two weeks ago, and so you buy and then you check how that runs for the week, so when you buy for the next week, you assume that is how the tariffs is going to be, [but] it couldn’t last for the week.”

Her comments reflect the growing discontent among citizens who feel financially drained by rising utility costs.

Madam Louisa Kwakye further criticized the NPP’s handling of the economy, coining the phrase “one day, one problem” to summarize the continuous challenges faced by Ghanaians.

She argued that instead of enjoying the “day of the Lord” with rejoicing, citizens are burdened by skyrocketing prices and an endless series of problems.

“But as the NPP has decided to make it one day one problem, they are making that rejoicing kind of questionable in our eyes.”

The cost of basic commodities, such as cement and food items, was another point of concern in her remarks.

She observed that prices have become unaffordable for the average Ghanaian, citing examples such as the cost of a bag of cement reaching 110 cedis and the continuous rise in food prices. She lamented; “You want to go and buy food, and the prices of food items are soaring.”

Madam Louisa Kwakye’s concerns reflect the worsening economic situation for many families across the country.

Healthcare Concerns and Dialysis Costs

Madam Louisa Kwakye also turned her attention to the healthcare sector, focusing on the struggles of kidney patients who require dialysis treatment. While acknowledging the efforts of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in offering corporate social responsibility programs, she expressed disappointment that many Ghanaians are still struggling to afford life-saving treatments.

“Why are our brothers and sisters who have these medical issues still struggling to raise money for their health conditions?”

She noted that some patients, particularly children and the elderly, receive free or subsidized dialysis sessions.

“The sad reality is that the people who are within the working class are the people who are overly burdened and need more of that cushioning.”

A Call for Preventive Healthcare

However, others strongly advocated for preventive healthcare measures, which she believes would save the government money in the long run. Meanwhile, in conversation with the NHIA boss, he emphasized the importance of prevention over treatment. He hammered a lot more on preventive [measures] and that we have to do more preventive than just curative.

Madam Louisa Kwakye agreed that investing in preventive healthcare would reduce the financial burden of treating chronic diseases and save lives.

President Mahama’s Promises for Healthcare

She concluded her statement by expressing hope for the healthcare policies the NDC would do when they come into power.

“President Mahama has already said that there will be a dedicated source of funding for issues relating to renal, so we are looking at the preventive measures it would be an all-year-round, a daily something.”

According to her, erstwhile John Mahama has promised to focus on preventive healthcare.

“As part of the market enhancement program, he is going to add a health facility to new markets that will be built and the big market faclity too would have a facelift to get that added on So that when you are in the market, if you get a little chance and no one is buying anything, you can quickly dash to the health facility in the market space and get your breast checked.”

Louisa Kwakye Member of NDC Communications Team

By focusing on both curative and preventive measures, Madam Louisa Kwakye believes the NDC can offer real solutions to the healthcare challenges facing Ghanaians.

“Every single life matters,” she emphasized, calling for more significant investments in healthcare infrastructure to make Ghana a health hub for all its citizens.

Madam Louisa Kwakye’s remarks reflect the frustration and hope of many Ghanaians.

In conclusion, her call for improved utility services, affordable healthcare, and preventive measures encapsulates the broader vision of the NDC to prioritize the well-being of the nation’s people.
