Concerns Raised About Rise of Cyberbullying, Nudity on Social Media

MIB

In the digital age, social media platforms have transformed communication, information sharing, and connections with others.

However, this new communication landscape has also given rise to serious issues, particularly cyberbullying and the proliferation of nudity.

These problems not only pose risks to individual users but also raise broader societal concerns about mental health, privacy, and the impact of technology on interpersonal relationships.

Recent studies indicate a troubling rise in cyberbullying incidents. The significant increase from previous years, highlights the urgent need for effective intervention strategies.

The CEO of Groupe Jay N Jay and former Ghana’s Most Beautiful Queen, Akua Amoakowaa, expressed concern over the rise of cyberbullying and explicit content on TikTok and emphasized the need for regulation to protect users.

She condemned the increasing insults on TikTok, particularly youngsters targeting elderly individuals. She also criticized the proliferation of nudity on the platform, attributing these issues to youngsters seeking stardom and fame without considering the consequences.

In an exclusive interview with Ghanaian artist, Bismark Paapa Amponsah, popularly known as MIB in the entertainment industry has revealed the key factors that contribute to the rise in cyberbullying incidents especially among young users.

“The anonymity of social media, lack of regulation, and pressure to conform to social norms contribute to the increase. Young users are also more vulnerable due to their naivety and desire for validation.”

MIB

He noted how anonymity contributes to cyberbullying. “Anonymity emboldens bullies, removing accountability and consequences, and it’s easier to hide behind fake profiles and avatars, making tracking and reporting difficult,” he added.

This anonymity leads to a culture of impunity, where individuals feel free to express hateful or hurtful sentiments without fear of repercussion.

The artist claimed that the desire for validation, attention, and likes drives young people to share explicit content, believing it equals fame and success, adding that they often underestimate long-term consequences.

With what drives young people to seek validation this way, MIB maintained that “Insecurity, low self-esteem, and the need for instant gratification drive young people to seek validation through likes and followers.”

The effects of cyberbullying are devastating. Victims often experience a range of psychological issues.

MIB shared the impact of cyberbullying and explicit content can have on mental health and interpersonal relationships.

“Cyberbullying and explicit content increase stress, anxiety, and depression, altering perceptions of relationships and communication.”

Moreover, the impact extends beyond the individual. Schools and communities are affected as well, with increased bullying leading to decreased academic performance, increased absenteeism, and a toxic environment for students.

Proliferation of Nudity on Social Media

In addition to cyberbullying, the rise of nudity and explicit content on social media platforms is another alarming trend.

While social media is a space for self-expression and body positivity, it also becomes a platform for the non-consensual sharing of explicit images, often referred to as “revenge porn” or “image-based sexual abuse.”

The unauthorized sharing of intimate images has devastating effects on individuals, leading to emotional distress, reputational damage, and even legal repercussions. Victims often feel violated and powerless, as their privacy is stripped away without their consent.

Addressing the issues of cyberbullying and nudity on social media requires a multifaceted approach involving individuals, communities, and technology companies.

Education plays a crucial role in combating cyberbullying.

MIB expressed how parents and educators can equip young people, and also advised young content creators.

“Educate them on online safety, etiquette, and responsibility. Encourage critical thinking, media literacy, and open communication. Young content creators should focus on quality, informative content that promotes positivity. Prioritize authenticity, originality, and values over fame and likes.”

MIB

Governments play a pivotal role by enacting laws that specifically address cyberbullying and image-based sexual abuse.

The artists stated emphatically that there should be stricter regulation, improved reporting, and user education to enhance safety. “Platforms must prioritize accountability,” MIB said.

Countries like the United Kingdom and Australia have begun to implement laws targeting online harassment, setting a precedent for others to follow.

The rise of cyberbullying and nudity on social media presents significant challenges that demand immediate attention. As technology continues to evolve, so too must strategies for ensuring the safety and well-being of users.

The responsibility lies not only with individuals but also with communities, technology companies, and governments to take a stand against these alarming trends.
