NDC Calls for Overhaul Of Flawed Voter Register

The Electoral Commission (EC) has called on the public to disregard a circulating video that allegedly shows a voters’ register being transported in a white pick-up truck.

The Commission clarified that the purported register in the video is misleading, as the official voters’ registers produced by the EC are in black and white, not in color, as depicted in the footage.

Additionally, the EC emphasized that the final voters’ register is always made available to all political parties, ensuring transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

“The Electoral Commission (EC) has taken note of a video circulating on social media which shows a copy of a supposed Voters Register for Ahafo Ano 1 and 2 being transported in a white pick-up truck together with other registers. The Voters Register shown in the video is not that of the EC”.

The Commission further explained that, as has always been the practice, political parties are provided with copies of the final voters’ register, which they also print for use by their agents during the electoral process.

This ensures that all stakeholders have access to the same information, reinforcing the transparency of the electoral system.

The EC also pointed out that the white pick-up truck shown in the video is not the property of the Electoral Commission.

As such, the Commission maintained that t the video does not reflect the Commission’s official operations or processes. “The Public should disregard the said video”.

The Commission also asserted that the video appears to be a deliberate attempt to undermine public confidence in the Commission and its operations by fostering suspicion and mistrust.

To address this, the EC has called on the Police to thoroughly investigate the matter and uncover the motives behind the circulation of the video.

The Commission further noted that the registration number of the white pick-up truck, which is clearly visible in the footage, should serve as a key lead to assist the Police in identifying the individuals or entities involved and determining the circumstances surrounding the video’s creation and distribution.

EC Enhaces Media Access for Elections

Meanwhile, the Commission also announced that starting from Saturday, 7th December 2024, accredited media personnel will be granted access to Constituency and Regional Collation Centres.

According to the EC, access will be based on the presentation of official photo accreditation cards issued by the Electoral Commission.

“Following internal discussions and consultations with key media personalities, the Electoral Commission (EC) is pleased to announce to the Media and the General Public that media persons assigned photo accreditation to cover Polling Stations will be able to use the same accreditation to cover Constituency and Regional Collation Centres”.

By facilitating media access to key collation centers, the Commission aims to ensure that the public receives timely and accurate information about the electoral proceedings, fostering trust in the integrity of its operations.

The Electoral Commission (EC) also explained that the updated media accreditation system is designed to offer media personnel enhanced flexibility and greater access to critical election centers.

According to the electoral body, this revision aims to facilitate comprehensive and effective nationwide media coverage of the electoral process.

The Commission strongly emphasized that this adjustment reflects its unwavering commitment to promoting openness and enhancing credibility in the December 7th elections.

The EC further expressed its commitment to supporting the media in their role as a vital bridge between the Commission and the public, fostering trust and confidence in the electoral process. “Arrangements for media access to the National Collation Centre will be announced in due course”.
