The African Energy Chamber (AEC), widely regarded as the voice of Africa’s energy sector, has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama on his successful re-election.

Praising his visionary leadership, the AEC believes President Mahama’s victory signals a new phase of growth and innovation for Ghana’s burgeoning energy industry, which has become a cornerstone of the nation’s economic development.

In an official statement, NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC, remarked: “President John Mahama’s re-election marks a new chapter for Ghana’s thriving oil and gas sector, fueled by bold investments and strategic growth initiatives.”

“The country’s oil and gas sector has tremendous potential for growth, and we believe that with the right policies and investments, Ghana can become a leading player in Africa’s energy industry.”

NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC

This sentiment reflects the significant strides Ghana has made under President Mahama’s leadership, including increasing oil production, enhancing gas infrastructure, and implementing forward-thinking energy policies.

Ghana’s journey in the oil and gas sector has been marked by consistent growth since the 2007 discovery of oil in the Jubilee field.

The country has achieved an impressive production rate of approximately 200,000 barrels per day, solidifying its position as a leading oil producer in West Africa.

This milestone has been accompanied by an ambitious vision to diversify energy resources and attract substantial international investments.

Underpinning this success is Ghana’s Gas Master Plan, which aims to maximize the potential of natural gas as a critical component of its energy mix.

The plan includes several flagship projects designed to bolster the natural gas value chain and reduce the country’s reliance on imported fuels.

These initiatives not only enhance energy security but also create opportunities for economic growth and industrial development.

Among the transformative projects shaping Ghana’s energy landscape is the Tema LNG Plant, which is expected to commence production by the end of the year.

With a production capacity of 1.7 million tons annually, this facility will strengthen Ghana’s energy independence and position the country as a regional hub for liquefied natural gas (LNG) distribution.

Similarly, the upcoming Atuabo II Gas Processing Plant, scheduled for completion by 2025, is set to process 150 million standard cubic feet of gas daily.

Future plans include doubling this capacity to produce LNG, propane, butane, and condensates. These developments demonstrate Ghana’s commitment to unlocking the full potential of its natural gas reserves, fostering industrialization, and reducing carbon emissions by prioritizing cleaner energy sources.

Ghana’s Role in Shaping Africa’s Energy Future

Ghana’s ambitions to become a regional energy hub were in the spotlight at the recently concluded African Energy Week (AEW) in Cape Town, South Africa.

Organized by the AEC under the theme “Invest in African Energies,” the event saw a Ghanaian delegation present bold reform aimed at elevating the country’s status within Africa’s energy landscape.

The AEW underscored Ghana’s role as a trailblazer in integrating renewable energy with traditional oil and gas resources to create a balanced and sustainable energy system. Key topics included the deployment of gas-to-power projects, the electrification of rural areas, and policies designed to meet the country’s ambitious goal of achieving universal electricity access by 2030.

Looking ahead, African Energy Week 2025 is expected to further connect Ghana’s energy stakeholders with global investors, facilitating partnerships that will propel the sector forward.

“We are proud to see Ghana taking bold steps towards energy independence and economic diversification.

“The country’s energy sector has made remarkable progress, and we look forward to supporting its efforts to unlock new opportunities and improve the lives of its people.”

NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC

The African Energy Chamber remains optimistic about Ghana’s energy future. In its statement, the AEC expressed its commitment to collaborating with the Mahama administration to foster sustainable development and economic growth through energy innovation.
