The African Energy Chamber (AEC) has announced its strong support for the decision to renew Haitham Al Ghais as the Secretary General of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) for a second three-year term, effective August 1, 2025.

The decision, made during the 189th OPEC Conference, underscores Al Ghais’ significant contributions to the global energy sector and his exceptional leadership during a period of unprecedented challenges in the energy landscape.

NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC, lauded the renewal, stating, “The renewal of Haitham Al Ghais as OPEC Secretary General is a testament to his exceptional leadership and the vital role he plays in shaping global energy policies.”

Al Ghais’ tenure at the helm of OPEC has been marked by his ability to navigate complex market dynamics, advance sustainability goals, and foster global cooperation.

His leadership has enhanced OPEC’s standing as a central figure in global energy governance and reinforced the organization’s mission to promote stability in oil markets.

“His vision aligns with the AEC’s mission to foster strategic cooperation and enhance energy security through sustainable oil and gas development.

“We look forward to continued collaboration with OPEC under his leadership as we work towards an energy future that benefits all nations, particularly those in Africa.”

NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC

The African Energy Chamber highlighted Al Ghais’ collaborative approach, particularly his efforts to build bridges with non-OPEC producers and the broader energy community. These initiatives have promoted greater dialogue, enhanced cooperation, and ensured stability in energy markets.

His renewal as Secretary General comes at a critical juncture, as the global energy sector faces evolving demands driven by climate goals, advancements in technology, and geopolitical shifts.

Al Ghais’ leadership ensures continuity in OPEC’s strategic direction, which is crucial for managing these transitions effectively.

One of the hallmarks of Al Ghais’ leadership has been the strengthening of ties between OPEC and African energy producers. African countries are key players in the global energy market, with Nigeria, Algeria, Libya, Gabon, the Republic of Congo, and Equatorial Guinea contributing significantly to global oil supply.

Through strategic partnerships, OPEC has worked to support Africa’s energy aspirations, including investments in upstream oil and gas sectors and initiatives aimed at addressing the continent’s energy security challenges.

The African Energy Chamber applauded OPEC’s efforts to promote energy diversification in Africa. The organization’s emphasis on fostering strategic dialogue with African countries has also encouraged investments and collaboration, ensuring that the continent’s energy resources are developed in ways that align with both regional and global sustainability goals.

“Africa’s energy sector holds immense potential to drive economic growth and address energy poverty.

“OPEC’s continued engagement with Africa, under the leadership of Haitham Al Ghais, is critical to unlocking these opportunities while ensuring that Africa remains a vital player in the global energy space.”

NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC

The decision to renew Al Ghais’ mandate reflects OPEC’s commitment to maintaining a balance between energy security and climate objectives.

As the global energy landscape undergoes significant transformation, the organization’s leadership will play a crucial role in ensuring that oil-producing nations, particularly those in Africa, are not left behind in the transition to cleaner energy sources.

The African Energy Chamber has long advocated for an inclusive approach to energy transition—one that recognizes the role of oil and gas in meeting immediate energy demands while gradually incorporating renewable sources.

OPEC’s collaborative leadership, under Al Ghais, aligns with this perspective, prioritizing pragmatic solutions that address both short-term and long-term energy challenges.

The renewal of Haitham Al Ghais as OPEC Secretary General represents a continuation of visionary leadership at a critical time for the global energy sector.

His collaborative approach, strategic foresight, and commitment to fostering partnerships have strengthened OPEC’s role as a stabilizing force in global energy markets.

The African Energy Chamber’s endorsement of Al Ghais underscores the importance of his leadership for Africa, as the continent seeks to harness its vast energy resources to fuel development and address energy challenges.

Together, OPEC and African stakeholders are poised to shape an energy future that balances security, sustainability, and shared prosperity.
