President John Mahama's 120-day assessment.

President John Dramani Mahama

Martin Amidu, former Special Prosecutor, has stated that President Nana Akufo-Addo’s determination to use state power to deny President-elect John Mahama a fair election was clear in both rhetoric and actions, right up to the final hour of voting.

Amidu highlighted the Ghanaian electorate’s wise decision to elect Mahama with a strong vote in the first round, noting that this showed the public’s resolve to challenge the political elite and deep state.

He indicated that Mahama’s victory is a challenge to the incumbent government’s belief that ordinary Ghanaians are too naive to make informed decisions based on national self-interest, despite the government’s pre-election incentives.

“President-elect of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, I send you my good wishes on this occasion of your well-deserved and landslide victory despite the incumbent machinations of the Vice-President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia with the support of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the just ended Presidential election on 7 December 2024. Nature’s justice has prevailed over self-centered human desires and intentions.

“The purposeful decision of the Ghanaian electorate not to create any situation for a run-off Presidential election shows the appreciation of the electorate of the dynamics of politics when faced with a government that has wantonly abused the trust they placed in it almost eight years to the date of the election on 7 December 2024”.

Amidu further stated that the Ghanaian electorate’s decision to make John Dramani Mahama President-elect shows their belief that he has learned from past mistakes.

According to him, Ghanaians trust John Mahama to address the mess left by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government, despite the promises made when they were elected eight years ago.

He congratulated President-elect Mahama, expressing admiration for his perseverance and victory.

This victory, Amidu said, will allow Mahama to positively impact the lives of ordinary citizens.

He noted that there is widespread enthusiasm and hope for a peaceful election and a change of government, signaling a potential African renaissance under Mahama’s leadership.

Amidu Urges Mahama to Uphold Accountability

Furthermore, Martin Amidu stated that he is confident the President-elect understands the expectations of the Ghanaian people.

According to him, Ghanaians expect the new government to audit the causes of Ghana’s economic struggles and the suffering it has caused ordinary citizens, while the government and political elite enjoyed a comfortable life.

He reminded Mahama of his promise to open the books and inform the public about how their resources were used over the past eight years, to uphold the principles of probity, transparency, and accountability as required by the 1992 Constitution.

Accra Market Economic Activities

“Your victory is mainly due to the confidence the people have in you to entrust to you their mandate to clean the ongoing economic mess and get our looted monies back to the Republic of Ghana in the shortest possible time.

“I pray that upon your assumption of office on 7th January 2025, you will as the President of Ghana with your Government, and the new Parliament of Ghana reciprocate the trust and confidence reposed in you at these elections by getting our looted monies back in the shortest possible time. The Agyapa Royalties Transactions which Parliament was promised on oath in 2021 will be investigated under the Nana Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government is still waiting for your government”.

Martin Amidu

He asserted that Ghanaians are watching the institutions Mahama will use to fight corruption and economic crimes.

Amidu expressed hope that, in fulfilling his promises, especially in auditing the past, Mahama will rely on state institutions that are independent, impartial, and professional.

He indicated that these institutions must operate under the presumption of innocence, as guaranteed by the 1992 Constitution.

He warned that fanfare and public trials undermine professionalism in auditing and investigations, which should serve as tools of impartial justice. “The landslide victory you were given at the polls exhibits the trust and the expectations of the electorate in and from you”.

Amidu urged the former President to use past experiences, lessons, and diligence to unite all Ghanaians, including those who didn’t vote for him.

He pointed out that this approach will help Mahama leave a legacy of leadership focused on rebuilding a strong, motivated, and united Ghana, capable of demonstrating leadership both in Africa and globally. “May God guide, guard, and bless you in the difficult task ahead to always Put Ghana First”.
