Appiah-Kubi Expresses Shock After Losing Seat in Akim North

Hon. Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi outgoing Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akim North

In the aftermath of the just-ended elections, Hon. Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi Esq. the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akim North Constituency in the Ashanti Region, has expressed shock after losing his seat in Asante Akim North.

He highlighted his political journey, challenges, and plans for the future. The former MP reflected on his tenure, the events leading to his electoral defeat, and his resolve to move on with grace.

“If I retire from politics, I will still be a member of the community and therefore, my views, I will always share. It is not closing my eyes and ears to politics. Virtually talking about local-level politics and constituency politics, I won’t be part again. But at least my opinions are free to share.”

Hon. Appiah-Kubi dismissed the possibility of returning to parliament. He added; “No, I won’t. I would not. The stress is all gone, and I’m expressing my will freely. I’m enjoying my life again.”

He advised aspiring politicians on what to do first before entering into politics. He cautioned;

“Develop a fallback position before you venture into politics. A fallback position means when you lose your political position, you can always get something to do. Therefore, you don’t come home empty-handed.”

Reflecting on the election, Hon. Appiah-Kubi acknowledged the significant challenges he faced. He lamented;

“The whole party virtually in my constituency was against me. All my executives, except one or two or three of them, were campaigning for the independent candidate.”

Despite the challenges, he remains glad to have represented his people. He appreciated;

“I want to thank the people of Asante Akim North for giving me the honor to serve them. I have done that on two occasions, two terms. I have no regrets because I’ve had the opportunity to also play my role as a parliamentarian.”

Hon. Appiah-Kubi detailed how the independent candidate incited public opinion against him. He lamented;

“When you are churning out negative information about somebody in the rural setting, people will still consume that information and make a decision.”

He noted his efforts to address these issues through regulatory bodies like the National Media Commission (NMC), although with limited success.

Looking ahead, he plans to seek legal redress to address the defamatory allegations.

“The only remedy to me is to get them to come and establish the facts in the allegations they made in the appropriate quarters.”

The electoral results painted a stark picture of his defeat, with Appiah-Kubi securing 8,933 votes compared to the independent candidate’s 26,926.

“I had circumstances that made it difficult for me to campaign. The prohibitions were high, and therefore, it happened the way it did.”

A Legacy of Service

“I had decided to finish a last term, unfortunately, because of the projects that I had started and I had not finished. Fortunately, people will come and continue.”

Hon. Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi’s reflections reveal the challenges of political life, the importance of resilience, and the value of serving one’s community.

His experiences offer lessons for current and aspiring politicians, particularly the need for preparedness and integrity in public service. He stated;

“Monday, I came to my office, prepared myself, and tomorrow I’m going to court and I’m going to defend my client. So, business as usual.”
