Agyarko Calls for Reforms in the NPP

Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko

Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, former Energy Minister, has stated that the outcomes of the 2024 election are bringing much-needed clarity, with growing calls for decisive actions to “rescue” the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He highlighted that some members are advocating for the party to be “taken back,” while various reform proposals are being put forward to reshape the party’s direction.

While acknowledging that these ideas are valuable, Agyarko emphasized the need for a structured approach.

He cautioned against disjointed, reactionary responses, stressing the importance of organizing and aligning these suggestions into a coherent and effective reform agenda.

“In response to a similar situation, albeit less humiliating, there arose a grand conspiracy in 2009 that seized the party, under the guise of pursuing reforms, and put it in the hand of one man creating a “Caesar” thereby.

“The current clamor, in my mind, seeks to undo the effects of “Caesar” on the fortunes of our party”.

Agyarko further emphasized that in the NPP’s quest for restoration and healing, it is imperative for the party to proceed with caution, thoughtfulness, and diligence.

He warned that without a deliberate and well-considered approach, the party risks repeating past mistakes that could undermine its renewal efforts.

He stressed that while there may be a clear understanding of “who we are taking our party from,” equal attention must be paid to “whose hands we are entrusting the party to.”

According to Agyarko, this process requires careful reflection and strategic decision-making to ensure that the party’s future is placed in capable, visionary, and trustworthy leadership.

NPP Warned Against One-Man Control and Past Mistakes

Furthermore, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko cautioned the NPP against the dangerous tendency of placing absolute trust and power in the hands of a single individual.

He warned that such a move could lead to a scenario where one person seizes control of the party, treating it as their personal property while reducing party members to mere subordinates subject to their whims and dictates.

Agyarko emphasized that the strength of a political party lies in collective leadership, inclusiveness, and shared responsibility.

He argued that no individual should wield unchecked authority over the party’s affairs, as this approach breeds autocracy, stifles diverse perspectives, and weakens internal democracy.

NPP SUPPORTERS

To avoid this, he called for a system of checks and balances within the party’s leadership structure to ensure accountability, transparency, and fairness in decision-making processes.

“We must ensure that our efforts this time round create a party of like-minded men and women in pursuit of building a nation for the benefit of all rather than an organization hijacked by a cabal to transfer public wealth into private pockets or worse still, a cultic organization that in supine impotence bows to the whims and caprices of an individual”.

Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko

Agyarko emphasized the need for the NPP to have absolute clarity on the type of political organization it aims to model its reform agenda on.

He stressed that without a well-defined vision and strategic framework, the party risks embarking on disjointed and ineffective reforms.

Agyarko argued that the party must critically assess its core values, principles, and long-term objectives to determine the most suitable organizational model.

This, he noted, would require thoughtful deliberation and input from key stakeholders, including party executives, grassroots members, and senior party figures.

By doing so, the NPP can ensure that its reforms are not only systematic and coherent but also aligned with its broader mission of serving the Ghanaian people. “These are the central issues that must seize our attention now”.

He cautioned that those who disregard their history are bound to repeat past mistakes, forcing themselves to start afresh instead of building on “the wisdom and accomplishments of the past”.
