SSNIT Honours Outstanding Self-Employed Contributors at 2024 Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has celebrated nine self-employed individuals for their exceptional contributions to Ghana’s social security scheme.

The awards were presented during the 2024 SSNIT Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, held at the SSNIT Pension House to usher in the festive season.

The awardees were recognized in three distinct categories: Top Model SEED Contributor for maintaining the longest streak of prompt payments, Exceptional SEED Contributor for making the highest contribution payments, and Rising Star SEED Contributor for being the highest non-defaulting self-employed contributors.

These awards highlight the critical role self-employed individuals play in the success of SSNIT’s innovative Self-Employed Enrolment Drive (SEED) programme, which seeks to expand pension coverage for workers in the informal sector.

Driving Pension Inclusivity with SEED

Launched in May 2023 in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, the SEED programme seeks to provide social protection to self-employed individuals and informal sector workers who historically lacked access to formal retirement plans. Since its inception, the programme has witnessed remarkable growth. From an initial enrolment of approximately 13,000 members at launch, the number has surged to over 121,000 by December 2024.

The significant increase highlights the trust and value contributors place in the scheme. SSNIT provides members with a range of benefits, including old-age pensions, invalidity pensions, and survivors’ lump sums, ensuring a reliable social safety net for contributors and their dependents.

Delivering the keynote address at the ceremony, Mr. Ko Osafo-Maafo, Director-General of SSNIT, emphasized the importance of self-employed contributors in sustaining and growing the SSNIT scheme.

“The Trust recognises your contributions to the scheme towards your retirement journey. We also wish to encourage you and all self-employed contributors to continue contributing to the Scheme and enjoy the benefits,” he stated.

Mr. Osafo-Maafo further noted that the awards ceremony was designed to inspire not only the recipients but also other self-employed persons and informal sector workers to see the value in securing their future through the SSNIT Scheme.

Testimonials and Commitment

The awardees expressed gratitude to SSNIT for acknowledging their efforts. They highlighted how being part of the scheme has not only provided financial security but also reinforced their commitment to contributing their quota towards strengthening Ghana’s social protection systems.

One awardee remarked, “This recognition is a testament to the importance of planning for retirement, even as self-employed individuals. I am proud to be part of a system that ensures my hard work today translates into security for tomorrow.”

The success of the SEED programme and the stories of these outstanding contributors serve as a call to action for other self-employed individuals and informal sector workers in Ghana. With over 80% of the workforce in the informal sector, initiatives like SEED are critical in ensuring that all workers, regardless of their employment status, can enjoy a dignified retirement.

SSNIT remains committed to creating a robust social safety net for Ghanaians. Through continued engagement and awareness campaigns, the Trust aims to expand its reach and impact, ensuring that no worker is left behind.

As Ghana continues its journey toward economic freedom, the role of pension schemes like SSNIT cannot be overstated. By fostering inclusivity and recognizing the contributions of all workers, SSNIT is laying a foundation for a future where financial security is within reach for every Ghanaian, irrespective of their employment type.
