Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin outgoing Majority Leader

In a significant political development, the National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has confirmed the leadership for its Minority caucus in the 9th Parliament.

The confirmation comes ahead of the official swearing-in ceremony for Members of Parliament (MPs) and marks a pivotal moment as the party prepares to steer its agenda in Parliament.

Known for his eloquence and legal expertise, Afenyo-Markin has been a prominent figure in Parliament over the years.

 He will be supported by Patricia Appiagyei as the Deputy Minority Leader, further solidifying the leadership team with her extensive experience in governance.

The Chief Whip role has been entrusted to Frank Annoh-Dompreh, who will play a critical role in ensuring party discipline and coordination among the Minority MPs.

Additionally, Habib Iddrisu has been named the First Deputy Whip, while Davis Opoku (popularly known as OPK) will serve as the Second Deputy Whip.

These appointments aim to bring dynamism and a balanced representation of skills to the leadership team. Speaking briefly, Afenyo-Markin emphasized;

“The party will show an official statement, but all I can say is that I thank the National Council for the trust in me, the decision to confirm me to lead my side in Parliament.’’

He further pledged to prioritize perseverance as he assumes his new position. He emphasized; “I can promise them one thing, hard work. May God be my guide.”

His remarks highlight a focus on determination and a reliance on faith as key pillars of his leadership philosophy.

The leadership structure reflects a strategic choice by the NPP to consolidate its efforts in Parliament, especially as the Minority caucus.

With Alexander Afenyo-Markin at the helm, the team is expected to bring a blend of experience, negotiation skills, and policy focus to the table.

Endorsement of Bagbin as Speaker for the 9th Parliament

In a related development, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Banda, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim has strongly endorsed the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin for the position of Speaker of the 9th Parliament of Ghana.

He underscored Bagbin’s unmatched experience, critical thinking, and ability to provide the necessary leadership in the current parliamentary climate.

Hon. Ibrahim emphasized Rt. Hon. Bagbin’s extensive leadership history, describing him as a “statesman” who has held virtually every significant parliamentary role. He emphasized;

“When he [Bagbin] was a leader in this house, Nana Akufo-Addo was foreign Affairs minister. John Mahama was spokesperson for communication. Aseidu Nketiah was chairman for energy. So, all the political gurus you have in this country were under him.”

He lauded Bagbin’s ability to mentor and guide political heavyweights, emphasizing that many prominent leaders in Ghana’s political landscape today have worked under his leadership. He remarked;

“The kind of parliament that we have now, you need a statesman who will be able to look into the eyes of the president and tell him, Mr. President, this will not work. This will work.’’

Ibrahim pointed out that Bagbin has historically demonstrated this quality, standing firm against decisions that lacked merit.

“When we needed somebody to look into the eyes of Akufo Addo and tell him the truth, nobody. It was Alban Bagbin who told him that, ‘Oh, enough of what you are doing,’ and that’s what has brought us to where we are. So clearly, we don’t need a rubber stamp parliament.”

Hon. Ibrahim reiterated that Bagbin’s track record sets him apart from any other candidate for the Speakership role.

“As a minority leader, he’s been minority leader before. As a majority leader, he’s been majority leader before. As a deputy speaker, he’s been deputy speaker before. As a speaker, he’s been speaker before.”

Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim MP for Banda

The MP questioned why anyone would overlook Bagbin’s qualifications and opt for someone else. He argued that Bagbin’s experience and integrity make him the ideal candidate to lead Parliament in such a critical time.

Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim’s endorsement of Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin as Speaker for the 9th Parliament highlights the latter’s vast experience, firm principles, and ability to stand as a pillar of accountability.

His remarks not only reinforce Bagbin’s suitability for the role but also call on Parliament to prioritize competence and statesmanship in their selection process.
