Akufo-Addo’s Tenure, a Classical Example of How Not to Govern – Deputy Minority Leader

Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Deputy Minority Leader and MP for Ellembelle

The Deputy Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Ellembelle Constituency, Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has strongly lashed out at President Akufo-Addo’s administration following the President’s State of the Nation Address in Parliament.

Speaking on the floor of the Parliament, Hon. Buah painted a grim picture of the nation’s current condition, emphasizing widespread economic hardship, skyrocketing debt, rampant youth unemployment, and a pervasive sense of hopelessness among citizens.

He described the Akufo-Addo administration as the “worst government under the 4th Republic,” asserting that the President’s tenure has left an indelible mark of failure.

He highlighted the economic turmoil that has characterized the administration, from the massive debt burden to the unprecedented levels of youth unemployment, which he argued has pushed many Ghanaians into despair.

“Mr. Speaker, we have come to the end of the road for what has been undoubtedly the worst government under the 4th Republic. Economic hardship, huge debt overhang, high youth unemployment, hopelessness, and more—this is the true state of the nation.”

The Deputy Minority Leader also took a jab at President Akufo-Addo for being the first President under the 4th Republic to begin and end his tenure while under the “cushioning” of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).  “Mr. President, you’ll be remembered as the first president who was cushioned by the IMF when you began, and you are still being cushioned at the end of your term,” Hon. Buah quipped.

The Cathedral Promise and Leadership Failure

In a particularly pointed critique, Hon. Buah called out the President for failing to address the controversial issue of the National Cathedral project in his address.

Referring to the President’s earlier commitment to God to build the cathedral, Hon. Buah remarked, “Mr. President, you left out something very important in your account—you left out an account of your promise to God to build Him a cathedral. But Mr. President, I will leave that for you, between you and your God.”

Hon. Buah contended that the President’s leadership will serve as a cautionary tale for future generations. “His tenure in office will remain a timely reminder of how not to govern the country,” he declared.

Despite his damning verdict on the current administration, Hon. Buah offered a message of hope, assuring Ghanaians that better days lie ahead under the leadership of President-Elect John Dramani Mahama.

“Let me also be quick to assure the good people of Ghana that hope is on its way. The President-Elect, John Dramani Mahama, when he assumes office, will work to turn things around,” Hon.Buah stated confidently.

The Deputy Minority Leader’s remarks underscored the opposition National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) commitment to addressing the nation’s challenges and rebuilding trust in governance.

He framed Mahama’s anticipated return to power as a beacon of hope for a nation weary of unfulfilled promises and economic strife. With the transition of power imminent, all eyes will be on the incoming administration to deliver on its promises and restore the confidence of the Ghanaian people.
