EC Declares Results in Three Out of Four Disputed Parliamentary Constituencies

From Left: Charles Forson, Tema Central MP-elect; Hon. Martin Adjei Mensah Akorsah, Techiman South MP-elect; and Hon. Patrick Yaw Boamah, Okaikwei Central MP-elect

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has declared parliamentary results in three of the four disputed constituencies following a series of legal directives.

The contentious collation process, which has sparked intense political scrutiny, culminated in announcements for the Tema Central, Techiman South, and Okaikwei Central constituencies.

The Deputy Returning Officer for Tema Central, Francis Twum, announced the results after collation for all 147 polling stations and one special voting centre, bringing the total to 148.

“Now following the court’s decision for the EC to complete the coalition of the 2 polling stations left in Tema Central. We have finalized the coalition for all 147 plus one, which is special voting, making 148 pulling stations in Tema Central, and here are the results”.

Francis Twum, Deputy Returning officer at Tema Central

The results declared are as follows: Charles Forson (NPP) had 18,870 votes, Ebi Bright (NDC) polled 18,815 votes and Frederick Anim-Adjei (Independent Candidate) garnered 209 votes.

With 37,894 valid votes and 144 rejected ballots, the total votes cast stood at 38,038. Francis Twum, the Deputy Returning Officer for the Tema Central Constituency declared, “In view of the above results and by the power vested in me, I declare Mr. Charles Forson of the NPP as the MP-Elect for Tema Central.”

In Techiman South, Returning Officer Amartey Adjawotor confirmed the conclusion of the collation process but acknowledged unresolved issues with two polling stations.

The declared results are: Hon. Martin Kwaku Adjei Mensah Korsah of the NPP had 46,663 votes, Christopher Bayere Basuntey of the NDC had 43,429 votes, Donkoh Moses, an Independent Candidate secured 140 votes while Boyong Idris, another Independent Candidate garnered 76 votes.

“Now there are issues with 2 outstanding polling stations, and these polling stations, polls have not been added to the polling stations that I read to you. These polling stations are DA Primary School, Bamri where there are 657 voters and Islamic JHS Abouso, which also has 481 voters.

“If you add them up, you will get 1,138, voters in these two polling stations. Even if you add this total number of voters to one candidate, it will not make a change to the winner”.

Amartey Adjawotor, Returning Officer for Techiman South Constituency

With a total of 90,308 valid votes, 844 rejected ballots, and 91,152 total votes cast, Mr Adjawotor declared Hon. Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah of the NPP as the MP-Elect for Techiman South Constituency.

Lastly, the collation process for Okaikwei Central was also finalized following the High Court directive, according to Deputy Returning Officer Harrison Kwabena Agyakwa.

The results after the inclusion of 31 polling stations, bringing the total to 141, are as follows: Hon. Patrick Yaw Boamah of the NPP, the incumbent MP had 21,099 votes while Abdullah Abu Baba Sadiq of the NDC secured 19,368 votes

With 40,467 valid votes, 198 rejected ballots, and a total of 40,665 votes cast, Mr Agyakwa declared, “Patrick Yaw Boamah is validly elected as the MP-Elect for Okaikwei Central.”

Suspension in Ablekuma North, NDC’s Rejection

However, the collation process in the Ablekuma North constituency has been suspended following disagreements between the NPP and NDC over polling station results.

The EC has not provided a timeline for resolving the impasse, further heightening tensions in the closely contested constituency.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress has rejected the EC’s declarations, citing an application for a stay of execution filed with the Appeal Court challenging the High Court order that mandated the collation.

Dr Rashid Tanko-Computer, the Deputy Director of IT and Elections of the NDC, in a media address, described the exercise as illegitimate and accused the EC of acting in defiance of due process.
