Discretion Key to ORAL’s Success, Says Barker-Vormawor

Corruption impedes Ghana’s development, undermining public trust, weakening institutions, and draining resources meant for national progress.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s launch of Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) is a bold initiative to address this pervasive issue.

However, for ORAL to truly be effective, it must go beyond rhetoric and deliver tangible results that strengthen Ghana’s democracy and restore faith in governance

Accordingly, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a prominent lawyer and social activist, has emphasized that the effectiveness of Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) hinges on its ability to operate with discretion.

He argued that the initiative should avoid public grandstanding and the pursuit of short-term propaganda gains.

Instead, Barker-Vormawor advocated for a more strategic and subdued approach, where the primary focus is on achieving substantive results rather than generating immediate public attention.

“By two years’ time, 200 arrests on the back of solid investigative work; and an indicting dossier.

“But along the road we need Kofi broke man to hold our stomach. There must also be the small small daylight shege, to keep moral high and public momentum and support intact”.

Oliver Barker-Vormawor

According to him, ORAL’s success will largely depend on its capacity to conduct thorough investigations and recover looted assets without unnecessary fanfare.

By maintaining a low profile, the initiative can prevent undue political interference and ensure that its actions are driven by justice and accountability rather than political expediency.

Barker-Vormawor further asserted that the quiet, methodical operation of ORAL will not only protect the integrity of the process but also build public trust over time.

He believes that genuine progress in the fight against corruption is best demonstrated through tangible outcomes rather than loud declarations.

This approach, he contended, will ultimately strengthen Ghana’s democratic institutions by showing that the fight against corruption is a serious, results-oriented endeavor, free from the distractions of political theatrics. “ORAL is about the survival of our democracy. Don’t fudge it up!”

Cudjoe Calls for Fair, Innovative Approach in ORAL

Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, also weighed in on the execution of ORAL, emphasizing the importance of fairness in its operations.

He stresses that while ORAL must adhere to principles of justice and impartiality, it should not shy away from employing unconventional methods to effectively tackle those who have engaged in corrupt practices, particularly individuals he describes as “wicked thieves.”

Cudjoe highlights that traditional approaches to combating corruption have often proven insufficient in addressing the deeply entrenched and sophisticated nature of corrupt networks.

Therefore, ORAL must be prepared to think outside the box and adopt innovative strategies to outmaneuver those who have exploited the system for personal gain.

This could involve leveraging advanced investigative techniques, strengthening collaborations with international anti-corruption agencies, and employing legal mechanisms that ensure swift and decisive action.

“A swift unannounced, shock and awe approach worked in Saudi Arabia. Can it work in Ghana? What would be the fallout?

“Saudi Arabia: Corruption crackdown ‘ends with $106bn recovered’ The crackdown was one of MBS’s first moves as crown prince and raised questions over his role as a reformer”.

Franklin Cudjoe

At the same time, Cudjoe underscores the necessity of maintaining a balanced approach.

Franklin Cudjoe also expressed deep concern over the staggering amount of public resources that have been misappropriated, lamenting that there is an overwhelming volume of stolen assets yet to be recovered.

He pointed out that the scale of corruption and the extent of looted funds in the country are alarming, representing a significant drain on resources that could have been used for national development.

Cudjoe’s remarks highlight the urgency of initiatives like Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) in addressing this critical issue.

The NDC’s Operation Recover All Loots is a commendable initiative with the potential to significantly impact Ghana’s fight against corruption.

However, its success will depend on transparency, bipartisan collaboration, institutional strengthening, and public engagement.

If effectively implemented, ORAL could be a transformative force in Ghana’s democratic journey, fostering a culture of accountability and integrity in public life.
