The Member of Parliament for Ellembelle Constituency and Deputy Majority Leader, Honourable Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah has expressed grave concern over an emerging environmental and health crisis in Kamgbunli, an area in his constituency, where a mysterious fish disease is devastating livelihoods and threatening public health.

In a strongly worded statement, Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah described the situation as “dire,” emphasizing the immediate need for intervention to prevent further harm to the community.

‘The situation in Kamgbunli is dire: fish caught in the Ebi River are exhibiting severe skin infections, making them unsuitable for sale or consumption. Additionally, the river has taken on a noxious odour and an unsettling color, heightening concerns about potential health hazards for our residents.”

He acknowledged the necessity of a temporary fishing ban in the affected rivers but stressed the urgency of scientific investigation to determine the cause of the contamination.

The National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament, in a fervent appeal, called on the Western Regional Fisheries Commission to expedite the collection of samples from the affected fish and river for thorough analysis. “Any delay in taking these crucial steps only prolongs the suffering of the Kamgbunli community,” he noted.

He also urged a multi-agency approach, calling on the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, and other relevant authorities to work collaboratively to address the crisis.

“This is not just an environmental issue; it is a matter of public health and economic survival for the people of Kamgbunli,” Hon. Buah stated, emphasizing the critical need for technical and logistical support to investigate and mitigate the unfolding disaster.

Impact on Livelihoods and Health Risks

Hon. Armah Kofi Buah further pointed out that fishing is a primary source of livelihood for the people of Kamgbunli, and the contamination of the Ebi River has left many families without a source of income.

He emphasized that residents are also increasingly concerned about the potential health risks associated with the river’s polluted state.

“This issue affects not only the fishermen but also the entire community who rely on fish from the river for sustenance. The noxious odour and unsettling appearance of the water add to fears of broader environmental hazards.”

Hon. Buah reaffirmed his commitment to standing with the people of Kamgbunli during this challenging time. He called on all stakeholders, including government agencies, local authorities, and environmental experts, to prioritize the issue and ensure that urgent needs are met.

“The people of Kamgbunli cannot face this crisis alone. It is our collective responsibility to act swiftly and decisively to safeguard their health, livelihoods, and environment,” he concluded. The Western Regional Fisheries Commission has been urged to act without delay in initiating investigations, while residents await further guidance on the ban on fishing activities.

In the meantime, Hon. urged local authorities to provide alternative support to affected families to alleviate the economic impact of the crisis.
