Brazil-Africa Energy Partnerships to Take Center Stage at AEC Reception

The African Energy Chamber (AEC) is set to host the highly anticipated Invest in African Energies Reception on January 30, 2025, at the Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro.

The exclusive networking event, scheduled from 18:30 to 22:00, will bring together energy leaders, investors, and stakeholders to explore opportunities for collaboration between Brazil and Africa. This reception is part of the AEC’s week-long working visit to Brazil, running from January 28 to 31, 2025.

NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC, emphasized the importance of this event in fostering collaboration between the two regions.

“The Invest in African Energies Reception in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro provides a valuable platform to strengthen Brazil-Africa ties, building on Petrobras’ renewed focus on Africa to drive mutual growth.”

NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC

The reception will highlight energy investment opportunities, with a focus on Brazil’s Petrobras, independent oil and gas producers, and international oil companies (IOCs).

Petrobras, the state-owned energy giant, has been actively pursuing investments in Africa, particularly in South Africa, Namibia, and Angola. Notably, the company plans to acquire a 40% stake in Namibia’s Mopane oil and gas exploration block.

“With advanced deepwater expertise refined in Brazil’s Campos and Santos Basins, Petrobras is well-positioned to drive transformative progress in Africa’s offshore developments, including strategic projects in the Orange Basin.”

NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC

In addition to Petrobras, Brazil’s independent oil producers have become significant players in the global energy landscape.

Companies such as PRIO, 3R Petroleum, Enauta, and PetroRecôncavo have demonstrated remarkable success in revitalizing mature oil fields, optimizing production systems, and utilizing advanced extraction technologies.

“Their capabilities in upstream operations, from field rejuvenation to long-term asset management, offer valuable insights and solutions for Africa’s onshore and offshore energy developments.

“Together, these players exemplify how Brazil’s energy sector can provide the technical skills and investment strategies needed to unlock Africa’s energy potential.”

NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC

The expertise of these independent producers serves as a blueprint for Africa’s energy sector, where similar challenges exist in optimizing production and managing aging oilfields.

IOCs in Cross-Continental Collaboration

The involvement of international oil companies (IOCs) in Brazil further enriches the opportunities for collaboration with Africa.

Industry leaders such as ExxonMobil, bp, Shell, and TotalEnergies have developed robust portfolios in Brazil’s pre-salt basins, offering expertise that can be transferred to Africa’s emerging energy markets.

TotalEnergies, in particular, is expanding its global strategy with a focus on projects in Namibia, Angola, and Suriname.

The company’s collaboration with Petrobras on the Mero project in Brazil’s pre-salt region has set a precedent for successful partnerships.

“As Petrobras signals readiness to explore opportunities across the Atlantic Basin, joint initiatives with IOCs could catalyze transformative projects in Africa’s upstream sector.”

NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC

NJ Ayuk highlighted ongoing efforts to foster meaningful partnerships between Brazil and Africa.

Companies like the Namibia Energy Corporation are already working with Brazilian service providers to develop new oil and gas fields, demonstrating the potential for cross-continental synergies.

Additionally, the AEC is engaging with key Brazilian players to identify opportunities for collaboration in advancing energy solutions that benefit both regions.

“This reception paves the way for high-level discussions and deal-signings in Cape Town, where Africa’s most compelling investment opportunities will be presented to leading energy players and the global investment community.”

NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC

The Invest in African Energies Reception will also serve as a precursor to African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025, scheduled to take place from September 29 to October 3 in Cape Town, South Africa.

This annual event is the premier gathering for Africa’s energy sector, bringing together global energy stakeholders, project developers, and policymakers.

The Cape Town event aims to expand Africa’s investor base, catalyze new sources of capital, and foster strategic partnerships.

The Rio reception will set the stage for high-level discussions and deal signings at AEW 2025, providing a platform for Africa’s most compelling investment opportunities to be showcased to leading energy players and the global investment community.

As the world moves toward a more interconnected energy future, events like these highlight the importance of partnerships in driving progress and ensuring shared prosperity.
