EC Opens Nominations for Regional Representatives to Council of State

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has issued a press release detailing the process for the upcoming elections to select regional representatives to the Council of State, in line with Article 89(2)(C) of the 1992 Constitution. 

The elections, a cornerstone of the country’s democratic governance, aim to ensure a fair, transparent, and inclusive process for all qualified candidates.

“Qualified persons who intend to stand for the said Elections should submit their Nomination Forms with two (2) copies of a recent bust-sized photograph against a RED background showing their full face and ears”.

The forms according to the Electoral Commission of Ghana are available for download on the Electoral Commission’s website. According to the statement, the Nomination Forms shall be submitted to the Regional Director of their respective Regions from Tuesday, 28th January, to Friday, 31st January 2025, between the hours of 9.00 am and 12.00 pm and 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm each day.

Eligibility and Support Requirements

To qualify for nomination, a candidate must meet some key requirements including obtaining the endorsement of two registered voters in their region as a proposer and a seconder. 

Candidates are also required to secure the support of 20 additional registered voters from the same region and provide their written consent to stand for election as a members of the Council of State.

This process underscores the EC’s commitment to ensuring that candidates have broad-based support within their regions, reflecting the collective will of the electorate.

The elections are scheduled to take place on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, in all regional capitals. Specific venues for the elections will be communicated by the Electoral Commission in due course.

The Council of State serves as a critical advisory body to the President, with its regional representatives playing a vital role in voicing the concerns and aspirations of their respective constituencies. By conducting these elections, the EC is not only fulfilling its constitutional mandate but also strengthening the democratic fabric of the nation.

The EC Chairperson, Mrs. Jean Mensa, reiterated the Commission’s unwavering commitment to transparency, fairness, and integrity throughout the electoral process. 

The Electoral Commission encouraged all eligible and qualified individuals to seize this opportunity to serve their regions and the nation. 

Prospective candidates were advised to ensure the accuracy and completeness of their nomination documents to avoid any disqualifications.
