NPP Withdraws from Media General Platforms Over Alleged Bias

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced its immediate withdrawal from all Media General platforms, citing persistent concerns about unprofessionalism and bias in the media outlet’s programming.

This decision was communicated in a strongly worded statement released by the party, which expressed frustration over repeated efforts to address the issues with Media General’s management, production team, and hosts.

The party claimed that these practices were designed to undermine its representatives and sow doubt among the public.

“For months, we engaged the production team, hosts, and management of Media General to address concerns regarding unprintable attacks on leading figures of our party, biased paneling of guests, and disruptive hosting of political shows designed primarily to drown and create doubt about the submissions of our representatives.’’

New Patriotic Party (NPP)

According to the NPP, despite assurances from Media General’s management dating back to 2023, the issues have persisted. The party expressed disappointment that the promised changes to rectify these practices had not materialized.

The NPP cited several examples of what it described as Media General’s unprofessional conduct. One notable incident occurred on a program hosted by Madam Keminni Amanor.

“A regular guest known for making inflammatory remarks recently insulted former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on a program hosted by Madam Keminni Amanor. Strangely, the host did not stop or object to the unwarranted attacks on the former president; she merely laughed them off. She allowed them.”

Moreover, the party urged the general public to assess the paneling, hosting, and coverage of NPP-related issues on Media General platforms, insisting that the alleged bias is evident. The party described;

“In particular, the Key Points and Newday political shows religiously feature disruptive hosting and biased paneling. Depending on the issue, they assemble three or four people whose political affiliation and orientation are known to be aligned with the National Democratic Congress against a single representative from the NPP.’’

The NPP further criticized the management of Media General for failing to act on calls to balance the invitations to the programs, describing their response as “pretentious deaf ears.”

The statement emphasized that the NPP had made genuine attempts to address these issues in collaboration with Media General’s leadership.

However, the party expressed disappointment that their efforts had not yielded the desired results.

“While dealing with the apparent bias against us was challenging, we held our end of the agreement with management that there would be a change. However, the change has not happened, and from all indications, it may not occur.’’

As a result, the party deemed it necessary to withdraw from Media General’s platforms to protect its integrity and ensure fair representation.

Commitment to Accountability

Despite withdrawing from Media General, the NPP reassured its supporters and the general public of its commitment to holding the government accountable.

“We wish to assure the NPP family and the Ghanaian people that our commitment to hold this already failing John Mahama Administration accountable will not be affected by this decision to withdraw from Media General’s platform, which has become decidedly biased against the public agenda.’’

New Patriotic Party (NPP)

The NPP’s withdrawal is expected to spark widespread debate about media bias and political representation in Ghana. Supporters of the party may view the move as a principled stand against perceived unfairness, while critics could question the implications for political discourse and engagement.

The development raises important questions about the role of media in fostering balanced political discussions and the responsibilities of media houses to provide fair platforms for all political actors. Whether Media General will respond to the NPP’s accusations remains to be seen.
