In recent times, discussions have emerged regarding the absence of Best Group category from TGMA, a move that has sparked concern among fans, industry professionals, and artists alike.

The Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) has long been a platform celebrating the rich tapestry of musical talent in Ghana.

Over the years, the awards have recognized various talents across genres, rewarding not just individual artists but also groups that have made significant contributions to the musical landscape.

Ghanaian music duo, Lali x Lola, has called on the Telecel Ghana Music Awards organizers to bring back the Best Group category.

The duo expressed concern over the absence of the Best Group category from the award scheme.

“Over the past few years, there has been a significant resurgence of talented and impactful music groups in Ghana. These groups are making tremendous contributions to the growth of the industry, with chart-topping hits, compelling live performances, and a renewed sense of collaboration.

“Notable groups such as Dope Nation, Keche, Team Eternity, Bhad Mayors, and ourselves—La x Lola— are just a few examples of the vibrant collective energy driving the industry forward.”

According to the duo who are also twins, they believe that reinstating the Best Performing Group category would serve as “a powerful recognition of this creative momentum and further encourage unity, collaboration, and innovation among artists.”

The Best Group category category has historically recognized the collaborative efforts of musical groups in Ghana, celebrating their contributions to the music scene.

Groups like VVIP, Praye, and MzVee and her band have made significant impacts on the industry, often blending various genres and styles that resonate with diverse audiences.

The absence of this category not only diminishes the recognition of these groups but also overlooks the collaborative spirit that is vital to the music industry.

Music is often a collaborative effort, and groups bring together diverse talents to create unique sounds. Recognizing groups encourages teamwork and collaboration, which are essential for the growth of the industry.

For many emerging artists, being part of a group is a stepping stone to a successful career. The Best Group category category offers visibility and validation, inspiring new artists to form groups and innovate.

Ghanaian music is characterized by its rich cultural diversity. Groups often represent various ethnic backgrounds and musical traditions, showcasing the country’s cultural heritage.

Recognizing these groups helps promote cultural pride and awareness.

The Telecel Ghana Music Awards took out the Best Group category from the list of categories in 2022.

The Head of Public Events and Communications for Charterhouse and a member of the board of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards scheme, Robert Klah, explained that the group of the year category was scrapped due to a lack of competitiveness.

The music industry professionals argue that the decision to eliminate the Best Group category overlooks groups’ significant impact on the music industry.

Many believe that awards should reflect the current music landscape and acknowledge the art form’s collaborative nature.

Call for Reinstating Best Group Category

In light of the overwhelming support for the Best Group category, organizers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards have been urged to reconsider their decision.

Various petitions and social media campaigns have gained traction, emphasizing the need for inclusivity and representation in the awards.

These campaigns aim to remind the organizers of the significant contributions made by groups and the importance of recognizing their efforts.

Stakeholders are advocating for a more inclusive approach to future awards, ensuring that all facets of the music industry are represented.

Lali x Lola, therefore, urged the Telecel Ghana Music Awards Board to consider bringing back the Best Group category for the 2025 edition and beyond.

In the meantime, a lot of industry stakeholders, apart from Lali x Lola, have also called for the reinstatement of the category especially on the back of sterling performances by groups such as DopeNation and Team Eternity Ghana.

The Telecel Ghana Music Awards play a crucial role in celebrating the vibrant music scene in Ghana.

The absence of the Best Group category has highlighted the need for inclusivity and recognition of collaborative efforts within the industry.

As artists, fans, and industry experts continue to advocate for its reinstatement, there is a growing sense of optimism that the organizers will heed these calls.

Ultimately, recognizing the contributions of musical groups will not only honor their hard work but also enrich the awards’ legacy and the Ghanaian music landscape as a whole.
