Mahama slammed for unemployment issues

President John Dramani Mahama

A recent survey by Global InfoAnalytics has highlighted a significant shift in voter perception, reflecting growing public confidence in the direction Ghana is taking under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.

According to the poll conducted across all 16 regions, a staggering 74% of Ghanaians now believe the country is moving in the right direction.

This marks a significant change from November 2024, when only 29% expressed similar optimism.

The survey, conducted between January 27 and February 16, 2025, indicated that only 16% of respondents still feel the country is heading in the wrong direction, while 10% remain undecided.

The findings come nearly a month after Mahama assumed office, highlighting growing public confidence in the new administration.

“The region with the highest proportion of voters who believe Ghana is headed in the right direction is the Savannah region with 92% while the Ashanti and Eastern are the lowest with 59% a piece.

“Coincidentally, John Dramani Mahama lost Ashanti and Eastern regions to his main challenger, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the 2024 presidential elections”.

The changing public sentiment indicates that even in regions traditionally considered strongholds of the opposition, there is increasing approval of the new government’s policies and leadership style.

This shift suggests a broader willingness among the populace to evaluate governance based on performance rather than party loyalty.

It also reflects a growing recognition of the administration’s efforts to address key national issues, signaling a potential realignment in political attitudes.

Mahama’s Performance Approval Hits 76%

In addition to measuring public perception of the country’s overall direction, the poll also evaluated President Mahama’s job performance since assuming office.

The findings revealed that an overwhelming 76% of Ghanaians approve of his leadership and the initiatives he has implemented thus far.

Conversely, 14% of respondents expressed disapproval, citing various concerns about his administration.

Meanwhile, 10% remain neutral, indicating that they are either undecided or awaiting further developments before forming a definitive opinion on his performance.

“The highest approval comes from his home region, Savannah, with 82%, while the lowest is in Central with 64%,” the survey report stated.

This represents a stark contrast to the public perception of former President Nana Akufo-Addo just before the 2024 elections.

In November 2024, only 35% of voters approved of Akufo-Addo’s performance, while 59% disapproved.

A key factor influencing the rising confidence in the government appears to be improvements in living standards.

The poll found that 54% of respondents say their standard of living has improved over the past 12 months, while only 10% believe it has worsened.

Meanwhile, 30% say their living standards remain unchanged, with 6% offering no opinion.

“However, when voters were asked whether they are optimistic their standards of living will improve in the next twelve months, 70% say they are optimistic—the highest ever recorded since polling started in January 2022”.

The rising sense of optimism reflects increasing confidence in the government’s economic policies and its capacity to drive the country toward sustained growth and prosperity.

This positive outlook suggests that many citizens believe the administration’s strategies are beginning to yield results, fostering hope for a stronger economy and improved living conditions.

However, not everyone shares this optimism. While 16% of respondents remain skeptical about the prospects of meaningful improvements, citing concerns about economic stability and governance, another 14% are undecided, possibly waiting for more tangible outcomes before forming an opinion.

Despite these reservations, the overwhelming majority anticipate a brighter future, signaling broad public support for the government’s approach to economic management.

Tracking Public Sentiment Moving Forward

As part of its ongoing efforts to track public sentiment, Global InfoAnalytics announced that its first national tracking poll of the year will commence in April 2025.

This regular polling exercise aims to monitor shifts in voter perceptions, approval ratings, and key economic indicators.

The results of this latest poll suggested that Mahama’s administration is starting on a strong footing.

However, sustaining this momentum will require consistent policy implementation, economic stability, and tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.

As the government settles into its term, all eyes will be on how effectively it translates early goodwill into long-term progress.

With public confidence soaring and expectations high, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether Mahama’s administration can meet the aspirations of the people.

Whether this optimism will endure depends largely on the government’s ability to address pressing economic challenges and deliver on its promises.
