We’ll Boycott Parliament Until Supreme Court Rules- Afenyo Markins

Alexander Afenyo-Markin Minority Leader

The Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has strongly denied allegations that he has illegally acquired state land.

He emphasized that the land he owns has been in his possession since 2006 and was never state property.

“I had my drones being flown, on my property. Don’t mind them [NDC]. They are very insincere people. How can you go and conduct a search on somebody’s property… Sometimes Politicians think that when you attack an opponent, it brings the opponent down and they would be popular.”

Alexander Afenyo-Markin Minority Leader

Afenyo-Markin criticized the actions of Hon. Ablakwa who conducted a search on his[Afenyo-Markin] property without proper justification.

The Minority Leader questioned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government priorities.

“NDC should know that they’ve won. They’ve won with a four-year mandate. They should be busy with implementation of their manifesto promise rather than coming after Afenyo Markin. They thought it was a state land and because there is a common boundary between my property and the Police Academy. So, maybe they thought is part of the Police Academy property that I had illegally acquired… If I see anything inconsistent with the law I would sue them. I would sue their individual personalities for the law to remedy the situation.’’

Alexander Afenyo-Markin Minority Leader

The Minority Leader’s statement is a strong warning, vowing to take a legal action if his name or property was falsely mentioned in Operation Recover All Loots Reports (ORAL) findings. He further questioned the rationale behind such investigation, emphasizing that the land in question was not state-owned.

Accusations of Surveillance and Harassment

Afenyo-Markin alleged that his properties were being subjected to unauthorized surveillance. He accused NDC officials of handling the situation unprofessionally, highlighting the inconsistency in their approach.

He emphasized that political power should not be used to victimize opponents, criticizing both major parties for perpetuating a cycle of political retaliation.

“If you win power, you don’t use the power to dislodge another person. And I must admit that since Kufuor’s era, the political class hasn’t done well with the management of power. All of us. I’m not blaming one side. All of us, NPP, NDC, we’ve not done well with the management of power. We are not learning lessons. We win power and the next thing is that you go after your opponent. For how long can you do that? Three months, six months people would get tired of you.’’

Challenges in Parliament

Moroever, Afenyo-Markin lamented over the tactics allegedly employed by the NDC against him in Parliament.

“The [NDC] went into a meeting. And the decision was that anytime I rise to speak, their backbench should start shouting. But I say, ah, these guys, whoever gave you this idea, has not helped you.”

Alexander Afenyo-Markin Minority Leader

He argued that such strategies were counterproductive, especially given the NDC’s strong majority in Parliament. He further criticized the Majority caucus in Parliament, stating;

“In the chamber Look, NDC has an overwhelming majority. One eighty-three plus independent candidates, MPs making one eighty-seven. Since we started, we’ve never had NDC filling their seats with up to 104 MPs.’’

Alexander Afenyo-Markin Minority Leader

The minority leader did not shy away from reiterating his stance on his property declaration as a Public servant.

“I’ve never bought a state land, and I’ve not bought any property belonging to the state. So quite reasonably, I don’t expect them to gather any information on me to the fact that I bought a state land.”

Alexander Afenyo-Markin Minority Leader

He concluded by stating that he was willing to cooperate with any state institution conducting legitimate inquiries rather he would not be cajole by than unjustified investigative tactics.
