Afenyo-Markin's on NPP defeat

Hon. Alexander Afenyo Markin

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remain united and focus on rebuilding after their electoral defeat.

Addressing party faithful, he acknowledged the disappointment but urged them to move forward with a renewed sense of purpose.

“I know that we are all heartbroken, we are all disappointed, we are all depressed, and not happy about the outcome of the elections. It is to be expected because when you go into an election and you don’t win, it comes with a lot of disappointment.”

Alexander Afenyo-Markin

However, he emphasized that the past is behind them, and the way forward is through hard work, forgiveness, and a collective determination to sacrifice for the good of the party.

Accordingly, Afenyo-Markin cautioned against internal strife, urging members to desist from public criticism and instead focus on internal discussions.

“Calling each other names and saying all manner of things on radio, social media, and TV, is not the way to go. I will plead with all of us, let’s move on as a party. We cannot say that everything was perfect, but even so, let’s manage it internally.”

Alexander Afenyo-Markin

He also emphasized that the party leadership has already initiated steps to evaluate the situation.

The National Council has tasked the Professor Michael Oquaye committee with conducting a thorough assessment, and members are encouraged to remain patient until the findings are released for internal review and discussion.

Drawing a comparison to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Afenyo-Markin reminded party members that an electoral defeat does not mark the end of their political journey.

He pointed out that the NDC, which is currently celebrating victory, has also experienced setbacks in the past.

Citing the party’s struggles in 2016, he noted that despite their challenges, they persevered and have now secured a dominant presence in parliament. “I believe that this almighty few of 88 [NPP MPs] in parliament would make history come 2028.”

History Can Repeat Itself for NPP

Furthermore, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin expressed strong confidence in the party’s ability to stage a comeback, drawing from historical political setbacks and subsequent recoveries.

He highlighted the determination he sees among party members and lawmakers, emphasizing that despite recent disappointments, the NPP has a track record of resilience and resurgence.

Reflecting on the party’s struggles in 1996, he recalled how a poor parliamentary performance, securing only 61 seats, was a significant setback.

However, under the leadership of J.H. Mensah, the NPP was able to reorganize, strategize, and ultimately secure victory in both the parliamentary and presidential elections in 2000.

This historical precedent, he noted, serves as a testament to the party’s ability to rebound from electoral losses and reclaim political dominance.

Encouraging party members to remain steadfast, he urged them to draw inspiration from past NPP administrations and uphold the values and principles that have guided the party’s successes over the years.

He stressed that with unity, determination, and strategic planning, the party can once again secure victory and return to power.

“All we have as a party is a legacy of Akufo-Addo, and by extension, the foundation that was laid in the Kufuor era. These are the combined legacies that as a party will stand on come 2028. Let us not forget about this.”

Alexander Afenyo-Markin

Accordingly, Afenyo-Markin urged party members to approach this period with introspection rather than hostility.

While acknowledging that individuals may feel disappointed or frustrated with party leadership or grassroots supporters, he emphasized the importance of addressing grievances constructively rather than resorting to public outbursts or divisive rhetoric.

He encouraged members to be patient with one another and to foster unity within the party.

Speaking to Christian members, he highlighted the significance of Lent as a time for deep reflection and spiritual renewal.

He urged them to use this sacred period for personal growth, introspection, and a renewed sense of purpose that could guide their actions moving forward.

Similarly, he called on Muslim members to take advantage of the Ramadan season for spiritual introspection and self-examination.

He expressed confidence that by engaging in sincere reflection and seeking inner strength, party members would emerge with a renewed sense of commitment and resilience to navigate the challenges ahead.

Looking ahead with optimism, Afenyo-Markin reassured members that despite the current difficulties, the party has the strength and potential to recover and reclaim political power.

He emphasized the importance of collective determination and unity in overcoming setbacks and working toward a stronger future.

“I know we can make it happen. God bless us. God be with us. May God strengthen us as we walk through these low moments to make our party, the NPP, strong again. Thank you very much, and God bless us all.”
