Small Scale Mining In Ghana

In a decisive move to combat illegal mining, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has revealed that a joint anti-galamsey task force comprising National Security, the Police, and the Forestry Division has carried out a major operation in the Amansie Central forest.

The objective of the operation was to reclaim lands that had been devastated by the activities of illegal miners.

“Excavators were seized and are currently parked at the police station, while additional excavators were rendered inoperable by removing their control boards.

“The operation was successful, and the Forestry Division has been tasked with reclaiming the forest immediately.”

This marks a significant milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on galamsey activities that have caused massive environmental destruction across the country, particularly in the Ashanti Region.

Dr. Amoakohene commended the task force for its unwavering dedication and hard work, highlighting its success in reclaiming two forest reserves from illegal miners.

He applauded the team on the ground for their efforts in safeguarding these protected areas and restoring environmental integrity.

Accordingly, the Ashanti Regional Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicating galamsey and protecting the environment.

He stressed that authorities would not tolerate any form of illegal mining, whether in forests, rivers, or along major roadways.

“This is just one of many ongoing operations across the region as we take bold steps to clamp down on illegal mining… Those engaged in these destructive activities will face the full force of the law.”

Dr. Frank Amoakohene

The destruction caused by illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, has been a major environmental concern in Ghana, leading to deforestation, water pollution, and the destruction of farmlands.

Despite numerous efforts by the government, the illegal practice has persisted, prompting stronger enforcement measures such as the recent operation led by the task force.

Bridge on the Verge of Collapse

Beyond the forest operations, Dr. Frank Amoakohene raised concerns about a critical issue affecting Odumasi, where illegal mining within the town has caused severe damage to essential infrastructure.

He pointed out that unchecked mining activities have not only disrupted the environment but have also put lives at risk by undermining the stability of key structures.

A major area of concern is the town’s main bridge, which has suffered significant deterioration due to underground mining.

The structural integrity of the bridge has been severely compromised, posing an imminent danger to residents who rely on it for daily transportation.

He described Odumasi as a community on the brink of collapse, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention to prevent a potential disaster.

“I personally visited the site yesterday, and as a safety measure, the bridge has been closed down while plans are being finalized for its reconstruction.”

Dr. Frank Amoakohene

Dr. Amoakohene stressed that the growing impact of illegal mining in residential areas demands immediate action, as it threatens both public safety and the long-term viability of local infrastructure.

He called for stronger enforcement measures to halt these destructive activities and protect communities from further harm.

Accordingly, he assured Ghanaians that the government remains resolute in its fight against galamsey.

He urged local communities to collaborate with authorities and report any suspicious mining activities to help safeguard the country’s natural resources and infrastructure.

“We will not relent in this fight to protect our environment, water bodies, and communities from the devastating effects of illegal mining. The time to act is NOW!”

Dr. Frank Amoakohene

With this renewed commitment, authorities are expected to intensify monitoring and enforcement measures, ensuring that illegal miners are held accountable for their actions.

The government’s stance on galamsey remains firm, and with the success of this operation, it is clear that Ghana is taking stronger steps to reclaim its forests and protect its environment.
