COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu Newly sworn-in Inspector General of Police (IGP)

The newly sworn-in Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has vowed to commit to Professionalism and accountability following his appointment by President John Dramani Mahama to the prestigious position of Ghana’s top police officer. 

In his inaugural speech, he acknowledged the significance of this appointment, describing it as a recognition of his dedication, hard work, and commitment to excellence throughout his policing career. He warmly stated;

“At this glorious moment today, I express my profound gratitude and the honor bestowed on me by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, Mr. John Dramani Mahama, for appointing me to this prestigious position as the Inspector General of Police of our dear country.’’

COP Yohunu, who joined the Ghana Police Service as a recruit in 1985, emphasized that the role of IGP is not just a title but a solemn responsibility that requires vigilance, integrity, and decisive leadership to ensure national security and the safety of citizens.

In his address, the IGP highlighted his vision for the transformation and modernization of the Ghana Police Service. 

“Your Excellency, I approach this responsibility with the utmost seriousness, fully recognizing the weight of expectations accompanying this role. In alignment with the transformation and modernization of the service, I pledge to uphold the values, traditions, and culture of the Ghana Police Service.’’

“So I assure you, Your Excellency, that professionalism, transparency, accountability, and fairness shall underpin my administration and performance, thereby positioning the service to meet the aspirations of our people and foster peace and security in our country. Consistent with the resetting agenda of Your Excellency the President, the guiding principles will include discipline and respect for seniority within the hierarchical structure of the service.’’

According to him, these principles are fundamental in maintaining law and order within the institution and ensuring that officers adhere to ethical standards in their duties.

He stressed that maintaining order and discipline would serve as the bedrock for effective law enforcement, allowing the police to operate with integrity and professionalism.

Community Policing and Public Engagement

COP Yohunu the new IGP strongly advocated for a collaborative approach to policing, stating that ensuring security in Ghana is a shared responsibility. He outlined plans to strengthen community engagement and community policing, where citizens actively participate in crime prevention and law enforcement efforts.

This approach, he emphasized, will help build trust between the police and the public, ensuring effective crime control and law enforcement strategies that reflect the needs of the people.

COP Yohunu took a moment to acknowledge the contributions of his predecessors, whose dedication and commitment to duty paved the way for the service’s current achievements. He also expressed gratitude to his colleagues and subordinates who have supported his journey and placed their confidence in his ability to lead.

“To the courageous policemen and women who believe in my ability to lead, I commit to remaining diligent and transparent in all aspects to collectively build the service we aspire to for our beloved nation.”

He assured that he would do everything within his power to make the police service proactive and responsive to security threats.

“By fostering a secure environment where justice, peace, and stability flourish, we can create the conditions necessary for everyone’s well-being.’’

He assured the public of his unwavering commitment to national security and crime prevention, pledging to work with all stakeholders to enhance law enforcement strategies.

COP Yohunu concluded his speech by calling for support from all stakeholders, including government officials, security agencies, and the public. 

“Once again, thank you for your trust. I’m both honored and eager to embark on this new chapter in my policing career, and I look forward to collaborating with each of you to cultivate a safer and more secure environment for the people of Ghana.’’

“May God bless the Ghana Police Service, bless our homeland Ghana, and bless us all. Thank you, sir.”
