The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has launched a three-day workshop aimed at strengthening the Public Relations framework of the Ghana Police Service (GPS).
The event, which began on March 20, 2025, is designed to enhance the communication strategies of all Regional Public Relations Officers and improve public engagement across the country.
In a statement issued by the GPS, the Police Service emphasized that the workshop is part of a broader initiative to revamp the Public Affairs Arm of the Service.
The objective is to ensure that police communication is clear, credible, and fosters stronger relationships between law enforcement and the public.
During his address, the IGP acknowledged the changing landscape of policing and the need for law enforcement to adapt in order to maintain trust and effectiveness.
Additionally, the IGP indicated that, under his leadership, the current Police Administration will reactivate and revive all Police Regional Public Affairs Officers to interact and meet the ever-evolving demands of our society and media partners.

He urged officers to embrace new communication methods that align with modern policing strategies.
By leveraging both traditional and digital media, the Service hopes to foster a more transparent and responsive police-public relationship.
Ethical Standards And Modern Approaches Emphasized
Furthermore, the Inspector General of Police encouraged officers to fully engage with the training program, emphasizing its importance in enhancing their professional skills and effectiveness in public relations.
He urged them to seize the opportunity to refine their communication abilities, exchange insights gained from their experiences, and embrace modern, innovative strategies for engaging with the public.
By doing so, he noted, they would be better equipped to foster trust, transparency, and a positive relationship between the police service and the communities they serve. “He also charged the officers to be guided by the core values and ethical standards of the Ghana Police Service.”

He also emphasized that police communication should be guided by three fundamental principles.
First, officers must balance confidentiality with transparency, ensuring that while sensitive information is protected, public communication remains as open and clear as possible.
Second, credibility and integrity should be at the core of all media interactions, with officers upholding the highest standards of honesty and impartiality.
Finally, consistency in messaging across all regions and units is essential to maintaining a unified and coherent voice for the Ghana Police Service.
The workshop was attended by several senior police officials, signaling its importance to the overall mission of the Ghana Police Service.
The IGP was accompanied by members of the Police Management Board (POMAB), including COP/Mr. Daniel Kwame Afriyie, COP/Dr. Ernest Kwabena Owusu, COP/Mr. Michael Nketia Frempong, COP/Mr. Iddi Lansah Seidu, COP/Mr. Peter Baba Atiniak, DCOP/Dr. David Agyeman Adjem, DCOP/Mr. Vance Gariba, DCOP/Ms. Lydia Yaako Donkor, and DCOP/Mr. Gabriel Prince Waabu.
Strengthening Community Trust Through Communication
With public confidence in law enforcement being crucial, this initiative seeks to bridge the gap between the police and the public.
By reinforcing a culture of openness and professionalism, the GPS aims to counter misinformation, provide timely updates, and foster greater cooperation with citizens.

The training will cover various aspects of police-media relations, crisis communication, and the use of social media as a tool for public engagement.
Officers will also participate in practical exercises to simulate real-world scenarios, equipping them with the skills necessary to handle complex communication challenges effectively.
The presence of top-ranking officers at the workshop underscores the commitment of the GPS to strengthening its communication channels and ensuring that law enforcement remains connected to the communities it serves.
As law enforcement evolves, the emphasis on strategic communication will play a crucial role in maintaining public trust, preventing crime, and ensuring a safer society for all.
