President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to economic reforms and social justice in a message marking this year’s May Day celebration.

Addressing the nation on Thursday, the President praised Ghanaian workers for their resilience, commitment and pivotal role in the country’s ongoing recovery and industrial agenda.

Speaking on the theme “Striving for peace and stability to drive industrialisation, trade, and decent work for social justice,” President Mahama stressed the significance of workers’ welfare in his vision to reset Ghana’s economy.

“Today is a special day for our gallant workers. On behalf of the people of Ghana, I celebrate your tireless efforts, dedication, and contributions to our progress as a country and people”

President John Dramani Mahama

Describing workers as “the engine of our economy,” he said they remained at the core of Ghana’s national development strategy, acknowledging their importance in sectors such as manufacturing, infrastructure, and innovation.

“You are the builders of our infrastructure, and the innovators who propel us forward”

President John Dramani Mahama

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment where workers could thrive, emphasizing the government’s broader agenda to “Reset Ghana.”

Stabilisation, Jobs, and Industrialisation Drive

President Mahama detailed the actions taken over the past four months to stabilise the economy, promote local industrialisation, and generate employment through a value-addition approach to Ghana’s natural resources.

“We have been actively pursuing policies,” he said, explaining that these interventions are meant not only to create jobs but also to expand market access for Ghanaian products.

“We are also working to strengthen our trade relationships, both regionally and internationally, to open new markets for the export of Ghanaian goods and services”

Central to this initiative is the implementation of a 24-hour economy model, which the President says will enhance productivity, create more jobs, and support Ghana’s long-term growth trajectory.

Jobs and Social Contract

Highlighting his 120-day social contract, President Mahama said job creation remains at the heart of his policy approach. He pointed to recently launched initiatives by the National Youth Authority, including the National Apprenticeship Programme, as proof of his government’s resolve.

“Only yesterday, the National Youth Authority launched the National Apprenticeship Programme, closely following the introduction of the Adwumawura and One Million Coders programmes”

According to him, these efforts are “strategic interventions to create opportunities for decent jobs,” especially for the youth, aligning with his broader objective of ensuring fair wages and skills development for all Ghanaians.

President Mahama noted that improving labour standards and workers’ rights is central to his administration’s labour reform agenda. He said the government will strengthen labour laws, enforce safety regulations, health regulations, and promote “social dialogue between employers and employees.”

“We recognise that inflation, unemployment, and inadequate infrastructure are challenges. But the government is determined to address these challenges head-on as we build Ghana together”

President John Dramani Mahama

To further deepen the assurance that his government remained determined to tackle all outstanding challenges decisively, the President further outlined plans to expand infrastructure investment, including road networks and energy access, as critical enablers of trade and economic activity.

President Mahama ended his address with a call for unity between employers and employees, urging both sides to work in collaboration to build an inclusive economy.

“Let us work together to create a more prosperous and equitable Ghana, where every citizen can contribute their talents and skills to national development”
