Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud speaks during a press conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, May 14, 2025 as Saudi Hails Trump’s Decision To Lift Sanctions On Syria

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud speaks during a press conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, May 14, 2025.

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud has hailed Donald Trump’s decision to lift sanctions on Syria.

This came a day after a US announcement that it would lift all sanctions on the Islamist-led government.

Addressing a press conference in the wake of the US President’s trip to his country, the Saudi Foreign Minister said that Syria is “incredibly grateful” to Trump “for taking the courageous decision to lift sanctions” and hopes other countries will follow suit.

He commended Trump as he said, “I know this is not an easy decision, but we believe very, very strongly that this is a necessary decision.”

He added that after many years of suffering, the Syrian people deserve a chance at a “better future.”

He cited the progress with Syria as a “case in point” for how engagement with the US can advance regional security and stability.

“We are in an incredibly difficult and dangerous time in the region. But nonetheless we are also in a time that offers incredible opportunity.”

Also, the Saudi Foreign Minister said that there will be many investment opportunities in Syria after the U.S. lifts sanctions,

Bin Farhan added that there will be a breakthrough in the kingdom’s support to Syria after the lifting of U.S. sanctions.

Separately, Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his thanks to Trump for the decision to lift all sanctions on the Syrian government.

In a speech to lawmakers from his AK Party in parliament, Erdogan also said that he has trust in the support of “my friend Trump” for Turkiye’s efforts to end the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza.

Saudi Arabia In Full Support Of US-Iran Nuclear Talks

Moreover, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud asserted that his country fully supports the US-Iran nuclear talks and hopes for positive results.

The Minister’s statement comes after US President, Donald Trump said that he wanted to “make a deal with Iran” during a speech at the summit of the US and GCC in the Saudi capital Riyadh.

However, the US President demanded that Tehran end its support of proxy groups throughout the region as part of any potential agreement.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister slammed Trump’s remarks that Tehran contributes to “collapse and suffering” in the region, instead pointing to Israel as a destabilising force. “Unfortunately, this is a very deceptive view,” Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said of Trump’s comments.

“The Iranian nation pursues the same aspirations toward progress and prosperity as other regional countries. What he stated about the hope of regional nations for a progressive, flourishing path, is the same path that people of Iran decided through their revolution.

“It was the U.S. that blocked progress of Iranian nation through sanctions for more than 40 years as well as its pressures, military and nonmilitary threats.”

Abbas Araghchi

Aragchi added that Trump turns a blind eye to Israel’s crimes and wants to present Iran as a threat to the region.

According to reports, Iran has suggested creating a joint nuclear enrichment venture involving Arab countries and US investments as an alternative to dismantling its nuclear programme.

Araghchi made the proposal to Special Envoy Steve Witkoff during talks in Oman on Sunday, a news agency reported on Tuesday, citing four unnamed Iranian officials.

The report came as Trump appeared to offer an olive branch to Iran during his visit to Saudi Arabia, saying that he would be “very happy” if he could make a deal with Tehran.
