The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced an urgent collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to restore electricity to several communities affected by a heavy rainstorm that swept through the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, May 18.

In a press statement released on Monday, May 19, ECG confirmed that extensive flooding caused by the downpour disrupted power supply in numerous areas, prompting precautionary disconnections in line with NADMO’s safety directives.

“We are working closely with NADMO and adhering strictly to their instructions on when and where to safely restore supply.”

A heavy rainstorm swept through parts of Greater Accra on May 18, 2025, resulting in widespread flooding. In response, NADMO acted swiftly by directing the isolation of several vulnerable areas to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of residents.

According to official statements, the following locales have been designated for isolation due to flooding risks: Borteyman Stadium, Affordable Housing, Borteyman Township, Little Roses, Lakeside, Nanakrom, Kissieman, Dome Pillar 2, Christian Village, School Junction, School Junction Melcom, Nmaidzor Zoomlion, University Farms, Trasacco 3rd gate, Legon Hill, Santoe, Blue Kiosk, Adenta ECG office, and Madina Islamic University.

In a statement, ECG explained, “After the rainfall, NADMO requested that the above-mentioned areas be isolated due to the flooding.”

The collaborative effort between ECG and NADMO is critical to ensuring that once the safety measures are fully implemented, power restoration can proceed without endangering repair teams or the public.

“Massive rainstorms and stormy winds usually cause the falling of trees, billboards, ripped roofing, and other debris on our electrical conductors, resulting in outages.”

ECG emphasized that while some outages are caused by automatic protective systems responding to transient faults — such as temporary contact with tree branches or debris — others involve significant damage to infrastructure that require more time to repair.

“Outages caused by transient tripping are restored soon after the rainstorm.

“However, permanent faults require full rectification by our engineers and may take longer.”

According to the statement, ECG’s field teams began assessment and repair work immediately after the storm subsided. Engineers are actively replacing damaged components, clearing debris, and verifying safety protocols before reconnecting affected lines.

“We deeply regret the inconvenience caused and appreciate the patience of all affected customers.”

The recent incident is a stark reminder of the challenges posed by extreme weather events—a challenge not unfamiliar to utility providers in the region.

As climate patterns become increasingly unpredictable, organizations like ECG are under pressure to enhance the resilience of their infrastructure.

In this light, the collaboration with NADMO is not just a short-term remedy but part of a broader strategy to fortify the energy distribution network against future storms.

ECG indicated that it would continue to monitor affected areas in collaboration with NADMO and local authorities. Full power restoration will be carried out in phases based on safety clearance and infrastructure readiness.

“We are prioritizing public safety while working to restore services. Our partnership with NADMO ensures that we do not compromise on either.”

Residents can track updates through ECG’s social media platforms and are advised to stay indoors during ongoing restoration work to avoid any hazards.

While the extensive rainfall on May 18, 2025, led to isolated outages across Greater Accra, the Electricity Company of Ghana, in partnership with NADMO, is taking swift and decisive action to restore power.

By prioritizing safety, clear communication, and robust repair strategies, ECG reaffirms its commitment to providing uninterrupted electricity to its customers—even in the face of severe weather disruptions.
