The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strongly worded statement condemning what it describes as an intensifying pattern of political persecution against its members by the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration under President John Dramani Mahama.

The statement, signed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua-Frimpong, warns that recent events constitute a direct attack on Ghana’s democracy and rule of law, and demands an immediate end to what the party calls “state-sponsored persecution.”

“These developments represent a calculated pattern of abuse of state power designed to weaken opposition voices and erode the democratic fabric of our nation”

New Patriotic Party

In the press release titled “State-Sponsored Persecution of NPP Members Must End Immediately,” the party claims that the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and other state security forces have been deployed to intimidate and harass opposition figures using force, rather than following due process.

One of the incidents cited is the dawn arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as “Adenta Kumi,” by men alleged to be NIB operatives.

The arrest reportedly took place at approximately 5:00 AM on May 23, 2025, at Kumi’s residence. According to the NPP, six of the operatives wore masks and carried AK-47 rifles in what they described as a “brazen display of intimidation.”

“This is clearly linked to Mr. Kumi’s recent petition to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, requesting the immediate dissolution of the committee established to review petitions for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo”

New Patriotic Party

Rather than engaging with the issues raised in Kumi’s petition through due process, the NPP argues, the state has responded with intimidation and suppression of the whistleblower. “This is a clear affront to democratic accountability and an ominous attempt to obstruct justice.”

The NPP also pointed to another incident involving its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.

According to the party, armed officers stormed his residence despite previous correspondence with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) regarding an invitation for him to assist in an ongoing investigation.

“Chairman Wontumi duly responded by assuring that he was not going to be available on the 21st as demanded by the CID because of medical reasons and that he will be available on Monday 26th May, 2025”

New Patriotic Party

“This is nothing short of political harassment,” the NPP declared, expressing shock at the action taken by the security agents. “It is thus, completely astonishing for armed men to storm his residence when these correspondences have gone on.”

According to the NPP, these actions form part of a broader, calculated effort to use state power to intimidate political opposition and silence dissent. The party warned that the consequences of such actions threaten the very foundations of Ghana’s democratic order.

“Such actions do not only violate the fundamental rights of Ghanaian citizens but also endanger the principles of transparency, justice, and equal protection under the law”

New Patriotic Party

The party concluded by calling on civil society, democratic institutions, all Ghanaians and all “defenders of democracy” to condemn these acts of political persecution and take a stand against what it sees as authoritarian conduct under the current NDC regime.
