Former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Jantuah, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for his handling of Ghana’s economy, urging him to allow the cedi’s sharp appreciation to continue until it equals the value of the US dollar.
In a passionate address, she described President Mahama as a “second Kwame Nkrumah” and the “messiah” Ghana has long waited for, citing his economic reforms and international standing as evidence of transformative leadership.
“The people are even crying, begging His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to halt the appreciation of the cedi, but I don’t think so. He should not halt it. He should let it get to one is to one”
Nana Yaa Jantuah, Former General Secretary of the CPP
According to Jantuah, the strength of the cedi under President Mahama’s current administration is not only a testament to sound economic governance but also a source of national pride.
She dismissed suggestions from some Ghanaians that the president should slow the appreciation of the currency, insisting instead that Ghana should fully embrace the benefits of economic competence.
She further emphasized that the rapid gains in the cedi’s value signify a long-overdue shift from years of economic mismanagement. According to her, President Mahama’s governance represents the antithesis of previous administrations she characterized as lacking knowledge, courage, and capability.
“We never thought that we’ll get something good like this. We never thought so because we were with people who didn’t do anything good,” she said.

Jantuah likened President Mahama to Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, asserting that his vision and leadership have restored hope to a country that had grown used to disappointment.
She attributed the current positive trajectory to President Mahama’s proactive decisions and competence on both local and international fronts.
Chairman Wontumi’s Arrest
Switching focus to recent developments involving New Patriotic Party (NPP) regional chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, Jantuah condemned attempts to politicize his arrest and legal proceedings.
She insisted that institutions such as the Economic And Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) must be allowed to do their work without interference.
“This one is nothing. Should EOCO just be there? EOCO has to work. BNI has to work. The NPP all should man up because I never knew that these people were not courageous”
Nana Yaa Jantuah, Former General Secretary of the CPP
She expressed disbelief at what she described as panic and dramatization surrounding Wontumi’s legal troubles, contrasting it with the composure others had shown under similar or worse circumstances.

“William Tevie, NCA, he faced it. His wife is my sister so he is my in-law. If you know the circumstances around his life and how he was jailed with those circumstances. Did he utter a word?”
Nana Yaa Jantuah, Former General Secretary of the CPP
Referencing her own past experience with the BNI, Jantuah detailed how she was detained, made to sit on hard metal chairs, and denied visitation – conditions she faced without drama or protest.
“I was kept there – A woman yet I faced it. So Wontumi and whoever else is going through this should face it,” she insisted.
Jantuah criticized what she called double standards in the political space, questioning why some individuals believe they are above the law when their political party is in power but play victim when under scrutiny.

According to her, courage and accountability should be embraced by all, irrespective of political affiliation. “If your time has come, go and face it. I faced it. They went through all my issues, and I’m sitting here today,” she said.
“What were they doing at EOCO?” Jantuah asked, questioning the NPP’s show of solidarity at EOCO’s premises during Chairman Wontumi’s arrest. She insisted that such demonstrations were unnecessary and unhelpful as “nobody would allow you in.”
In her final remarks, she underscored that Ghanaians must rise above political bias and embrace a system where the law applies to all.
