Premier League Club Manchester City have completed the signing of Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri in a £31 million deal.

This is a move by the 8-time Premier League champions as they continue to boost their squad ahead of a packed summer schedule and the Club World Cup.

The 24-year-old Algeria international has put pen to paper on a five-year deal that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2030.

Ait-Nouri would be eligible to feature for City in the group stage of the newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup, where the Premier League giants would begin their campaign against Moroccan side Wydad AC on 18th June 2025.

Ait-Nouri began his career from Wolves when he signed for them permanently in 2021 for £14.9 million from Ligue 1 side Angers, following an initial season-long loan at Molineux.

He quickly established himself as a key figure at left-back, playing a total of 41 games across all competitions last season. His contributions were significant in helping Wolves escape relegation, with the Algerian scoring five goals and assisting seven times in what proved to be a stellar campaign.

After signing the deal, Ait-Nouri expressed his excitement and said “City are one of the biggest clubs in the world and the chance to play for the club is a dream come true.”

“I am excited about working with and learning from Pep Guardiola and his coaching team and getting to train and play alongside such a world-class group of players”.

Ait-Nouri leaving Molineux marks Wolves’ second major departure of the summer, following the news that striker Matheus Cunha is set to join Manchester United in a £62.5 million transfer. These sales are in line with Wolves’ need to balance the books, as they navigate the Premier League’s financial sustainability rules.

For City, the signing of Ait-Nouri is part of a bigger transfer plan aimed at refreshing the squad and adding depth, especially in wide defensive areas. The club has already agreed a £46.3 million deal for Serie A side AC Milan’s midfielder Tijjani Reijnders. They had already  spent over £200 million in the January transfer window.

Analysis on Why Ait-Nouri fits Pep Style

According to former Wolves coach Edu Rubio, there are many ways in which Ait-Nouri is a perfect fit for Manchester City.

His technical ability, close control, and composure in tight spaces make him a strong fit for Guardiola’s possession-oriented system. He keeps the ball close to his feet, which is ideal for a team that relies on dominating the ball and building patiently.

He also has the pace and dribbling skill to carry the ball forward, helping the team advance quickly – something City could use more of, especially players capable of breaking opposition lines with direct runs.

Defensively, he has matured since arriving in the Premier League, and his one-on-one defending is impressive. Physically, he can hold his own, and his versatility allows him to play anywhere along the flank, including in the inverted full-back role Guardiola often uses.

However, his decision-making on the ball still needs refinement – he can occasionally take an extra touch that slows down the tempo, which could disrupt the rhythm of City’s fast-paced passing game. His final ball also requires improvement.

At a club like City, increasing his output in terms of assists will be essential. The good news is that it’s an area where he has room to grow and shows the potential to develop.

Manchester City in Search of A New Goalkeeper

Meanwhile, City are also looking to bring in a new goalkeeper before the summer transfer deadline. Talks are ongoing with Chelsea over a deal for Marcus Bettinelli, the 33-year-old English shot-stopper who has served as third-choice at Stamford Bridge over the last four seasons.

The move comes after City confirmed that veteran goalkeeper Scott Carson will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the month.

With the Club World Cup approaching and another Premier League title fight in sight, City’s transfer activity suggests they are not relying on all of the old players.

The signing of Ait-Nouri offers Guardiola a dynamic, attacking full-back option and adds yet more depth to an already star-studded squad.
