Ghana Football

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially announced the comprehensive competition schedule for the 2025/26 football season, featuring a structured rollout across various divisions, age groups, and genders.

The newly released calendar affirms the GFA’s intent to promote holistic football development while providing ample time for planning and preparation through early scheduling of key dates.

As in previous years, Ghana’s Premier League will continue to be played predominantly on Sundays, ensuring consistency for fans and broadcasters. Midweek slots will be utilized to accommodate outstanding fixtures and rescheduled games, maintaining the league’s competitive flow without congestion.

The Division One League and the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League have retained their traditional Sunday matchdays, offering continuity for participating clubs and supporters. This consistency in scheduling allows teams to maintain a stable rhythm, and fans to plan their attendance or viewing habits with predictability.

MTN FA CUP

The MTN FA Cup will mostly unfold over weekends. However, a few matches in the earlier stages; specifically the Round of 64 and Round of 32 may be played midweek to accommodate logistical demands.

The Women’s FA Cup, meanwhile, will be staged exclusively on weekends, ensuring greater fan accessibility and broader exposure for the women’s game.

Ghana Football

The growing popularity of digital sports is reflected in the return of the eTrophy – GFA eFootball Competition. This tournament provides gamers and football enthusiasts a unique path to represent Ghana in international eFootball events.

As part of the GFA’s expanded competitive structure, the Beach Soccer and Futsal Premier Leagues will continue in the 2025/26 season.

These niche formats offer players and fans alternative experiences beyond traditional 11-a-side football and align with FIFA’s global efforts to grow diverse versions of the game.

Regional Football Set for October Start

All leagues under the Regional Football Associations (RFAs)—including Division Two, Division Three, Regional Women’s Division One, and the various Colts Leagues (U13, U15, and U17)—will commence on or before October 1, 2025, and conclude by May 31, 2026.

This window ensures that players across the country, particularly those in grassroots and developmental systems, are provided with adequate match opportunities throughout the season.

Nationwide Girls Colts League Expansion

One of the standout features of the upcoming season is the full-scale national rollout of the Girls Colts competitions for the U15 and U17 categories.

Building on successful pilot programs in the Northern and Greater Accra Regions, this initiative is designed to unearth and nurture young female talent across the country.

Supported by FIFA’s Women’s Football Development Programme and the Ten RFAs, this expansion signals a landmark shift in the development of women’s football in Ghana.

The GFA sees this as a crucial step in building a strong pipeline for the women’s national teams, ensuring early exposure, regular competition, and professional guidance for promising girls in football.

Off-Season Tournaments Offer Year-Round Engagement

The 2025/26 calendar makes room for a range of off-season competitions, designed to keep players sharp and scouts engaged during the break.

These include; Elite U15 Girls Championship, Elite U19 Second Division Championship, Boys U15 Elite Competition, and KGL Foundation U17 Colts Championship.

These events not only provide a competitive platform outside of the traditional season but also serve as scouting grounds for clubs and national selectors alike.

In a strategic move aimed at improving administrative efficiency, the GFA has released key dates, including club registration periods and the highly anticipated 31st GFA Annual Congress well in advance.

Kotoko XI Wonders

This early communication is intended to give clubs, stakeholders, and technical teams the opportunity to align their operational timelines with the football calendar.

According to the GFA, “This scheduling initiative is part of our long-term strategy to deliver a structured, efficient, and competitive season at every level of the game.

Whether it’s youth football, women’s competitions, or professional leagues, we are committed to enhancing the experience for players, officials, and fans.
