Tim Mayer is set to announce his candidacy for the presidency of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) in the upcoming December election.

The 59-year-old American is poised to challenge the incumbent, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, in what is shaping up to be a highly contentious race for one of the most powerful positions in global motorsport governance.

Mayer, who has long been a key figure in various motorsport roles, will make his official announcement at a press conference on Friday morning, just days before the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

This timing has fueled speculation that the move could signal a renewed sense of purpose and strategic planning for Mayer.

Ben Sulayem’s presidency has been marked by a series of controversial decisions that have brought unrest among many within the motorsport community.

The most notable of these controversies has been the dismissal of several senior FIA officials, including Mayer, in what some view as a vindication of individuals who were critical of Ben Sulayem’s leadership style.

One of the most high-profile departures was that of Niels Wittich, the former Formula 1 race director, who was dismissed amid dissatisfaction with his handling of race operations.

Mayer’s departure was another blow to the FIA’s credibility, with many in the industry viewing it as a sign of internal strife. These actions have created a divided atmosphere within the FIA, with factions emerging in support of both Ben Sulayem and his critics.

A Career in Motorsport

Mayer’s entry into the FIA presidential race comes at a time of significant uproar in the organization, particularly following his own dismissal by Ben Sulayem in November 2023.

Mayer, the son of former McLaren team principal Teddy Mayer, has a distinguished career in motorsport management and officiating.

His extensive experience includes leadership roles in the US-based Champ Car series, IMSA, and the American Le Mans Series. Additionally, Mayer has served as a steward for a variety of FIA championships, including Formula 1, for 15 years.

His deep understanding of both the business and operational sides of motorsport has positioned him as a strong candidate for the FIA elections despite his fractured relationship with the current president.

In his most recent high-profile role, Mayer represented the Circuit of the Americas during a “right of review” hearing concerning a fine imposed on the track following a crowd invasion at the 2023 US Grand Prix.

The incident resulted in Mayer’s dismissal by Ben Sulayem, who reportedly felt that the review hearing included elements that were a personal attack on him.

This dismissal has sparked controversy within motorsport circles, with many questioning the motives behind Ben Sulayem’s decision and further intensifying the rivalry between the two figures.

The Presidency

The FIA presidency is one of the most influential positions in motorsport, overseeing all matters related to the sport’s governance, including regulation, safety, and technical standards. The ruling President, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, has held the presidency since December 2021.

Ben Sulayem, a former rally driver from the UAE, has faced significant scrutiny during his tenure, with various controversies surrounding his leadership, including issues related to the FIA’s financial management and the relationship between the governing body and Formula 1.

According to the FIA’s election rules, a candidate must have a fully assembled team of officials to fill key administrative positions before they are allowed to officially stand for election.

The nominations committee, which answers directly to the president, will also need to review and approve Mayer’s candidacy, adding a layer of complexity to his bid.

However, insiders are confident that Mayer has the backing required to mount a successful challenge to Ben Sulayem’s presidency.

His deep ties to the motorsport industry, together with his reputation for fairness and transparency, make him a viable candidate who could unite cracks within the FIA and bring stability to the organization.
