Real Oviedo midfielder Kwasi Sibo has expressed a passionate desire to help the Ghana national team end its prolonged trophy drought by winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and making a strong showing at the FIFA World Cup.

Sibo played a key role in Real Oviedo’s historic promotion to La Liga at the end of the 2024/25 season; the club’s return to Spain’s top tier after more than two decades.

The Ghanaian midfielder featured in 38 matches, scoring once and providing an assist, while putting in a string of performances.

Despite not yet earning a cap for the senior national team, Sibo has made no secret of his ambitions to don the famous jersey of the Black Stars.

The former Ghana U-23 player, i a media interview, spoke about his national team aspirations and what motivates him to contribute to Ghana’s football legacy.

“It has been a long time since the Black Stars won a major trophy. My ultimate goal is to win the AFCON with Ghana, and when it comes to the World Cup, I would love to help the team go far.”

Kwasi Sibo

Ghana, four-time champions of Africa, have endured a frustrating wait for continental glory, with their last triumph coming in 1982. Since then, the Black Stars have reached the final three times; in 1992, 2010, and 2015  only to finish as runners-up on each occasion.

That long spell without silverware weighs heavily on both players and fans, and Sibo believes he can play a part in changing that narrative.

Inspired by Morocco

Drawing inspiration from Morocco’s historic run to the semifinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar; the first African nation to achieve that feat. Sibo expressed confidence that Ghana has the talent and potential to match or even surpass such an achievement.

“Morocco reached the semifinals in Qatar, and I believe Ghana can do the same or even better. If given the opportunity, I want to be part of that success.” He added.

He finally said he was ready and also spoke about his role in helping Real Oviedo book a spot on this season’s La Liga.

“I’m fully prepared to play for the national team. I played a significant role in helping Real Oviedo earn promotion to La Liga, competing alongside some top-quality players. With the performances I put in last season, I believe I’m ready for the challenge.”

Sibo’s journey has been a steady one. A product of the Right to Dream Academy in Ghana, he has developed his game in multiple European environments, including Albania and England, before settling in Spain.

With qualifiers for the 2025 AFCON and the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, Sibo’s form could earn him a maiden call-up as the Black Stars coaching staff assess their midfield options.
