The Member of Parliament (MP) for Oforikrom, Hon. Michael Kwasi Aidoo, has cast serious doubt on the willingness and capacity of Ghana’s security agencies to bring to justice the perpetrators of violence that marred the recent parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North.
Speaking on the matter, the MP expressed strong concern over what he described as a pattern of political leniency and inaction in the face of clear evidence.
“And quite interestingly, when listening to Hon. Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed, the minister of the interior, who I respect so much – you know, he’s my neighbor in Kumasi, his constituency and mine share a boundary – Listening to him, I get a sense that nothing might be done”

Referring to a video in which individuals allegedly involved in the attacks on former MP Mavis Hawa Koomson openly confessed to their actions in the back of a pickup, Hon. Aidoo questioned why no arrests have been made.

Despite the availability of clear visuals, including faces and vehicle registration numbers, the MP noted that the authorities have failed to act. He criticized the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, for stating that the suspects could not be located.
“How can the Minister of the Interior tell us this?” Hon. Aidoo asked, completely not taken in by the narrative that the suspects were difficult to apprehend given the circumstances. “The faces of these gentlemen are all over.”
His concerns were not only rooted in what he described as a visible lack of action but also in the implications it holds for Ghana’s democratic health.
“In this country, people perpetrated acts of crime against policemen and in less than 24 hours, were picked up. These people who attacked Hawa Koomson are known. They came in party pickups with registered number plates”

Disbelief at Photoshop Claims
The Oforikrom MP was particularly outraged at suggestions that some of the damning videos in circulation may have been manipulated.

“It would be insulting to my intelligence for anybody to tell me that that video was Photoshopped,” he said, referring to footage that some claimed showed the suspects being bused from the Jubilee House, the seat of government.
“I know what Photoshop is, you know what Photoshop is,” the MP said, emphasizing that such claims undermine the seriousness of the issue and disrespect the public’s understanding of basic digital manipulation.
“The most painful thing in this country is when we are talking about serious matters and then people want to downplay it”

Parallels with Past Deflections
Hon. Aidoo linked the current response to a broader trend of official deflection, recalling Parliament’s recent handling of an LGBTQ+ protest photo taken at Independence Square.
“Just like the LGBTQ+ issue where some individuals came to desecrate Independence Square and took pictures and posted on social media – and we had a leader in Parliament standing in the chamber saying that it was an AI-generated picture”

Though the speaker eventually apologized, the Oforikrom MP argued that such dismissals only embolden lawlessness. “This shouldn’t come from them,” he said of government officials.
“These are clear images, see, that’s the one where they were at the presidency showing. These are clear images. How can this be Photoshop? Even AI cannot generate such vivid pictures or videos”

As questions mount over the government’s handling of the Ablekuma North violence, Hon. Aidoo’s comments join a growing chorus of voices demanding transparency, justice, and an end to political impunity.
For the Oforikrom MP, the situation is not just about one incident – it is emblematic of a deeper issue of state failure and political complacency and concluded with a grim warning.
“If we don’t act on this, we risk encouraging more of such acts. Justice delayed in this matter is not just justice denied – it is an endorsement of violence.”
