NDC Rejects Hawa Koomson Victim Claims

NDC rejects Koomson's victimhood

Mavis Hawa Koomson, former MP- Awutu Senya East

The ongoing debate over political violence in Ghana has taken a sharp turn as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Awutu Senya East Constituency publicly condemned attempts by certain figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to portray Mavis Hawa Koomson as a victim of political aggression.

According to the NDC, efforts to reframe Koomson’s public image are not only misleading but also a deliberate distortion of her political record.

The NDC declared that Hawa Koomson, the former MP for Awutu-Senya East, is widely known not as a target of political attacks but as a key instigator of violence throughout Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

The party emphasized that her reputation has been built on repeated incidents of aggression, lawlessness, and political intimidation.

“Let the records reflect that in the Ablekuma North rerun, the violence that erupted was not spontaneous, but it was directly triggered by the reckless actions of Hawa Koomson, who stormed the polling station carrying a weapon, specifically pepper spray, and compounded the tension with provocative and inflammatory language.

“Her conduct was not only irresponsible but deliberately calculated to intimidate and incite chaos. It is therefore both outrageous and infuriating that she and her enablers now have the audacity to demand public sympathy and call for an apology from President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress.”

Accordingly, the NDC labeled such efforts as deeply disrespectful to the victims of political violence and a blatant affront to justice.

The NDC insisted that Koomson does not deserve public sympathy or apologies.

In their view, what she merits is public condemnation, a thorough criminal investigation, prosecution, and imprisonment for what they described as her long-standing involvement in political violence.

The party referenced a notable 2020 incident, where Koomson openly admitted on live television that she fired a weapon at a polling station during the voter registration exercise.

The NDC highlighted that despite her public admission, she faced no arrest and was instead appointed as a minister by former President Akufo-Addo, “sending a clear message that violence against political opponents is a virtue in the NPP.”

NDC Cites Murder And Maiming Cases

The NDC further accused Hawa Koomson of fostering an environment where political violence became normalized in Awutu Senya East.

They cited specific incidents to support their claims, including the killing of Mohamed Yusif Larry, a young NDC supporter, during an election.

The party lamented that Larry’s death remains uninvestigated and his killers unpunished. They further pointed to the brutal attack on Innusah Bukari, who lost his leg after being assaulted by Koomson’s alleged supporters.

“Yet again, no one was held responsible. No arrests were made. No compensation was offered. And not even a single word of regret came from the woman at the center of it all.

“What is even more damning is the fact that members of her own party, loyal NPP supporters, and well-known allies of Hon. Kennedy Agyapong have confessed publicly that they fear for their lives whenever Hawa Koomson is present. When even her own colleagues in the NPP believe she is dangerous, the rest of the nation must pay attention.”

This, the NDC asserted, underscores the severity of the threat she poses.

The NDC alleged that Koomson’s approach to politics has consistently relied on importing thugs, using intimidation tactics, and leveraging state security forces to suppress opponents.

They claimed that these methods are not mere accusations but lived experiences documented in Awutu Senya East.

In their view, Koomson’s political legacy is marked by suffering and destruction, rather than service or leadership. They criticized her for seeking public sympathy and demanded that Ghanaians resist efforts to rebrand her as a victim of political violence.

Accordingly, the NDC called on Ghana’s law enforcement agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, the Criminal Investigations Department, and the Attorney-General’s office, to reopen investigations into all violent incidents allegedly connected to Koomson.

They emphasized that the killing of Mohamed Yusif Larry and the assault on Innusah Bukari should not be forgotten or dismissed.

They further insisted that Koomson’s televised admission of gunfire at a polling station should serve as sufficient grounds for legal prosecution under Ghanaian law. “Her legacy is a trail of blood, tears, bullets, and broken homes. And now, unbelievably, she wants Ghanaians to feel sorry for her?”

Describing the matter as an issue that transcends politics, the NDC argued that the pursuit of justice in these cases is a national responsibility.

They urged political leaders, civil society organizations, and the general public to reject impunity and demand accountability.

Finally, the NDC warned President John Dramani Mahama against considering any private negotiations or reconciliatory gestures towards Koomson.

They argued that genuine reconciliation is impossible without genuine repentance, which they claim Koomson has never demonstrated. “The only thing Hawa Koomson deserves from the government is a summons to appear in court. Nothing more. Nothing less.”
