Prisons Service, YEA Partner to Recruit 5,000 Youth

The Ghana Prisons Service has partnered with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) to recruit 5,000 young Ghanaians into a newly created programme designed to enhance the operational capacity of the Prisons Service while addressing youth unemployment.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ghana Prisons Service and the YEA to officially commence the “Youth in Prisons Service Assistance” initiative.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, this programme represents a strategic collaboration that empowers both institutions to contribute to national security while reducing the high levels of youth joblessness.

“Under the signed agreement, the YEA will be responsible for financing the training of all 5,000 selected beneficiaries and disbursing monthly stipends throughout the programme’s implementation period”

The Ghana Prisons Service will, in turn, design the training curriculum, conduct the training, and deploy the beneficiaries across various regions in the country.

The Ministry further stated that a Programme Management Committee will be formed to supervise and coordinate the operational management of the project. This committee will consist of representatives from both the Prisons Service and the YEA, “ensuring accountability and efficiency in execution.”

At the official ceremony to mark the signing of the agreement, the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, said: “We are grateful to President John Dramani Mahama for this proactive step toward reducing youth unemployment through pragmatic solutions.”

In an address to stakeholders, the minister noted that the government was not merely making promises but acting decisively on policy directions intended to create jobs and reinforce security structures nationwide. “We are not just speaking. We are acting,” he stated.

Broader Government Agenda

The Ministry of the Interior emphasised that this programme is part of a broader series of partnerships between the YEA and various state institutions.

The agency has already rolled out similar collaborative projects with the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service, all geared toward youth engagement and national service enhancement.

According to the Ministry, the Youth in Prisons Service Assistance programme is not merely a short-term job placement scheme, but a structured opportunity designed to build capacity among young Ghanaians while reinforcing national peace and security infrastructure.

“This is a serious commitment that will go a long way in addressing our country’s unemployment challenges. Yet this is a partnership designed not only to reduce unemployment but to also support the core mandate of the Ghana Prisons Service in sustaining law and order”

Ministry of the Interior

The programme is being lauded by policymakers and analysts as a proactive and integrated solution that aligns with President Mahama’s broader economic agenda, which prioritises job creation and institutional capacity building.

The Ministry maintained that beyond the direct employment of 5,000 youth, the initiative would “create secondary benefits,” in the communities where these individuals would serve, strengthening the visibility and reach of correctional and rehabilitation services across Ghana.

The Ghana Prisons Service indicated that it is prepared to take on the logistical and educational responsibilities necessary to train and integrate these new recruits into its operations. With curriculum development already underway, the Service expects deployment to begin in the coming months.

As part of its concluding remarks, the Ministry reiterated the need for continued collaboration between government institutions in tackling unemployment and strengthening the pillars of national development.

“Inter-agency synergy is critical. This partnership between the YEA and the Ghana Prisons Service shows that when institutions align their mandates, real change happens”

Ministry of the Interior

The rollout of the Youth in Prisons Service Assistance programme marks yet another step in the current administration’s efforts to address structural unemployment and institutional inefficiencies using collaborative and sustainable approaches.
