The Majority Leader Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has assured Ghanaians that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will use its newly secured two-thirds supermajority in Parliament responsibly, with a firm commitment to national interest and constitutional reform.

The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central’s assurance came in after the swearing-in of Hon. Ewurabena Aubynn as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North—a seat that tipped the scales firmly in the NDC’s favour.

With her victory and swearing-in, the NDC now holds a two-thirds majority in the House—a political milestone that has not occurred since Ghana’s return to democratic rule in 1992. Hon. Mahama Ayariga acknowledged the historical significance of the moment.

“Mr Speaker, I think we now have… the NDC now has two-thirds of the House. Mr Speaker, let me repeat that: the National Democratic Congress now, for the first time in a very long time, has two-thirds of this House.”

But with power, Hon. Mahama Ayariga stressed, must come responsibility. Quoting President John Dramani Mahama, the Majority Leader reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to good governance.

“Ghanaians today have given us all the numbers that we need to reset Ghana, and indeed, Mr Speaker, I want to assure Ghanaians that what President John Dramani Mahama said when he was being sworn in still stands: that the National Democratic Congress will not abuse the majority given to it by Ghanaians.

“We will use it wisely, we will use it properly, and we will make sure that these numbers endure to the benefit of Ghanaians.”

Commitment to National Interest

Hon. Mahama Ayariga highlighted the new majority’s potential to implement constitutional reforms that can realign Ghana’s governance framework with the aspirations of its people.

He underscored that the NDC’s legislative strength is not a mandate for political triumphalism, but rather an opportunity to correct systemic inefficiencies, deepen democracy, and restore public confidence in national institutions.

Hon. Mahama Ayariga described the journey to securing the Ablekuma North seat as “a long, drawn battle,” expressing gratitude to both divine providence and the resilience of the constituents.

“At long last, the people of Ablekuma North now have a Member of Parliament, and we are grateful to the Almighty God for making this happen. But even more, we are grateful to the people of Ablekuma North for their resilience”.

He recalled the chaotic and violent events of December 7, 2024, when the collation of election results in Ablekuma North was abruptly halted.

“They put up a fight starting from the night when the election results were being put together… and they have been fighting since December 12, 2024. Today, July 22, 2025, their aspirations are being met.”

Turning his focus to the new MP, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, heaped praise on Hon. Ewurabena Aubynn for her perseverance and courage throughout the protracted electoral and legal battle.

“She has really fought a hard fight. She has demonstrated what women can do. Very few men can withstand the pressure that this young lady has witnessed, and I want to commend her highly for weathering the storm”.

Welcome Message

Welcoming Hon. Ewurabena Aubynn into the parliamentary fold, he assured her of the majority caucus’s full support. “This side is available to help her to find her feet in this House,” he said, adding that her maiden statement is eagerly awaited.

He also commended the leadership of the NDC in Ablekuma North for their unwavering support throughout the drawn-out dispute and rerun election.

“I see them still offering their full support and backing to our candidate, now our Member of Parliament,” he noted, acknowledging the political and logistical support that sustained her campaign and legal battles.

In a moment of reflection, Hon. Mahama Ayariga observed that while the party had just welcomed its newest member, the house had also lost one of the MP, and a by-election looms to fill that vacancy.

Nonetheless, he expressed confidence in Hon. Aubynn’s potential to excel in Parliament. “Given the energy I see in her, she will catch up, and I believe overtake some of us,” he said.

In closing, the Majority Leader expressed gratitude to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, for fulfilling his constitutional duty in swearing in the new MP. “You’ve always done what no person can do better,” he said.

The atmosphere in Parliament was one of measured triumph, with the NDC now positioned to steer legislative business with unparalleled strength.

Whether that power will be wielded to reset Ghana, as promised, or merely consolidate party dominance, remains a question the future will answer.
