Son Heung-min Confirms Tottenham Exit

Son Heung-min

Tottenham Hotspur captain and fan favourite Son Heung-min has officially confirmed he will leave the club this summer, ending a remarkable 10-year spell in North London.

The South Korean star made the announcement during a press conference ahead of Spurs’ friendly match against Newcastle United in his home country.

Speaking emotionally, Son revealed that the decision to part ways with Tottenham had been the most difficult of his career.

He expressed deep gratitude to the club, fans, and staff who supported him throughout the last decade. “Before we start, I just want to share the information that I have decided to leave this club this summer,” Son said.

“Respectfully, this club is helping me to make my decision. It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career.

“The main reason is, I have achieved everything I can at Tottenham. I need a new environment for a fresh challenge.”

Having joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, Son has become one of the club’s most iconic players, endearing himself to supporters with his infectious energy, commitment, and memorable performances.

Over the course of his Spurs career, he made over 380 appearances and scored more than 150 goals across all competitions.

His time at Tottenham culminated in lifting the Europa League trophy earlier this year, breaking a 17-year trophy drought for the club.

Spurs’ 1-0 win over Manchester United in the final served as a fitting tribute to Son’s enduring contribution yet also symbolized a natural point of closure for his journey in North London.

Reflecting on his time at the club, the 32-year-old added, “I have been here for 10 years. It’s a beautiful club with beautiful fans.”

“I have such amazing memories. I just felt like I need a new environment to push myself to get more out of me. Ten years is a long time.”

Son also recounted how he arrived in England as a 23-year-old unable to speak the language and is now leaving as a seasoned professional, transformed by the experience.

“I came to north London as a kid… I leave this club as a man.

“Thank you to all the Spurs fans who have given me so much love. It felt like it was my home.”

Though he leaves behind a legacy at Tottenham, Son’s future now appears to lie in the United States. Reports suggest that a move to Major League Soccer is imminent, with Los Angeles FC (LAFC) believed to be the frontrunner.

Sources close to the deal indicate that Son is enthusiastic about the transfer, particularly with the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to be hosted in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

The forward has been open about his desire to secure regular playing time as he looks to prepare for what is expected to be his final World Cup appearance for South Korea.

Injuries and inconsistent form have seen his role at Spurs reduced in recent seasons, making the move to MLS a timely opportunity to reignite his career on a new stage.

While the confirmation of his departure marks the end of an era for Tottenham, it also sets the stage for a new chapter in Son Heung-min’s distinguished career.

His legacy at Spurs is etched in club history not only for his goals and silverware but also for the humility and professionalism with which he carried himself.

As he prepares for his next challenge, Son leaves behind more than just a footballing footprint—he leaves a model of dedication, loyalty, and perseverance that will be remembered by the Tottenham faithful for years to come.
