Nutrifoods Ghana Limited has issued a nationwide recall of specific batches of its popular Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix, following safety alerts from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and Ghana’s National Security.
The recall is in response to confirmed incidents of product bloating in both pouches and cans, raising serious concerns about food safety. The affected products include all batches of the Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix in 210g and 400g cans, as well as select batches of the 380g and 1.05kg pouches.
Consumers have been strongly advised against consuming these products. The company is asking the public to return any affected items immediately either to their Tema Office, to distributors nationwide, or by contacting their dedicated helpline on 050 538 4429, available from Monday to Friday between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm. Consumers may also email: tastytom.GH@olamnet.com.
Jay Jagadip Anjaria, Business Head of Nutrifoods Ghana Ltd, confirmed the seriousness of the situation.
“Our attention has been drawn by the FDA and National Security to some incidents of bloating in Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix pouches and cans (210g and 400g). We have therefore been directed by the regulator to issue this recall, whilst we investigate the root cause of the problem”.

The batch numbers for the recalled pouches, all expiring in January 2027, are clearly listed by the company and are found on the back panel of each pack. Consumers are urged to inspect the product packaging and compare against the provided batch numbers to determine whether their stock is affected.

The development has prompted regulatory authorities to tighten monitoring measures on the company’s operations. The FDA had earlier, in January 2025, suspended the can manufacturing lines for the 210g and 400g variants due to similar concerns.
According to the Business Head of Nutrifoods Ghana Ltd, production of these sizes had already ceased since the FDA’s intervention.
However, the latest incidents of bloating have compelled a broader recall of additional batch sizes and a complete suspension of all Nutrifoods manufacturing activities until further notice.
“It is important to note that the FDA has been inspecting our facility to ensure compliance with regulations. Currently, the company’s manufacturing activities have been suspended until further notice to ensure full compliance with all regulatory recommendations.”

Nutrifoods Ghana Ltd is now working in close coordination with the FDA to manage the recall process and to trace and retrieve affected products from the market.
The company said the decision to suspend operations and recall affected products was made out of an abundance of caution and a demonstration of its commitment to food safety.

“Please be assured that we are working closely with the FDA to ensure that this recall process goes as smoothly as possible. Moreover, if you have any of the Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix that you suspect may be affected, please return them to the above locations or contact the above number as well.”

The company also issued an apology to consumers and trade partners, expressing regret over the disruption. “We deeply regret any inconvenience caused to our consumers and trade partners because of this issue and recall”, he said.
The Business Head of Nutrifoods Ghana Ltd assured that the company is committed to delivering high-quality products meeting all the required stringent national food safety standards and ensuring its consumers are delighted with its products.
The firm assured the public that all affected products returned would be replaced without difficulty, and that its priority remains the health and safety of consumers.

“We want to reassure our consumers and trade partners that we are doing our best to recover all affected products and replace them without difficulty. We thank you all for your understanding”.

This is not the first time bloating or microbial spoilage in packaged tomato products has raised public concern in Ghana, where tomato mix is a staple ingredient in many households.
However, Nutrifoods Ghana Ltd’s swift response and public engagement may help mitigate consumer backlash and restore confidence in the brand over time. Further updates on the outcome of the investigation into the root cause of the bloating are expected in the coming weeks.
