Ghana’s Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured the public that the government under President John Dramani Mahama remains fully committed to completing all ongoing and inherited health infrastructure projects across the country.

He stressed that the administration will not repeat the mistakes of the past, where critical health facilities were abandoned because they were initiated by a previous government.

“I can confidently tell you that President John Dramani Mahama has his eyes on the health sector of the country, and he’s committed to completing all inherited hospital projects across the country”.

According to him, the current government views the health sector as central to its development agenda and will ensure continuity rather than politicization of projects. “He will not abandon any inherited health facilities we inherited from the previous administration, like what happened in the previous administration,” he added.

Hon. Akandoh highlighted the crucial role of the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, in making this vision a reality. He praised him for his commitment to releasing funds for projects that are deemed necessary and beneficial to the health sector.

“As for this current Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, be sure that once there’s an allocation for a project and it’s a good cause, he’ll make available funds for its execution”.

La General Hospital

One of the most pressing issues on the government’s agenda is the reconstruction of the La General Hospital in Accra. The Health Minister explained that the contractor had previously undertaken some work but was left unpaid, leading to delays in the project.

He disclosed that the 2025 budget has allocated about GHC120 million to address the funding gap and to push the project forward.

“The Member of Parliament for the area is on my neck and very soon I am going to engage the contractor and then assure them that the money has been made available and therefore they should go back. For now, I can assure you that we will expedite action on the construction of La General Hospital”.

Beyond La General Hospital, the Minister provided updates on other key health infrastructure projects. He confirmed that work has resumed on the National Medical Stores, which had been left abandoned under the previous administration.

Similarly, progress is being made on the long-delayed maternity block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. These facilities, once completed, are expected to significantly boost health service delivery in their respective regions.

Agenda 111 Health Projects

On the much-discussed Agenda 111 health projects, Hon. Akandoh outlined the government’s pragmatic approach to ensuring their completion. He explained that the administration has made the decision to prioritize those projects that are at least 70 percent complete, with the aim of finishing them quickly and making them operational.

“For the rest that are not up to 70% completed, the government has taken the decision to engage and partner with faith-based organizations, NGOs, and private individuals to complete them. It will be a PPP arrangement”.

The Minister was quick to point out that not a single Agenda 111 project was completed and operationalized by the previous government, despite the fanfare that surrounded the initiative, but underscored the Mahama administration’s determination to change the narrative.

The assurance from the Health Minister comes at a time when many Ghanaians are concerned about the state of public health facilities, especially in urban areas where demand for healthcare services continues to rise.

The delays in the completion of major hospitals have put pressure on existing facilities, leading to congestion and service challenges. By committing to continue and complete these projects, the government hopes to ease the burden on the health sector and improve access to quality care across the country.

In reaffirming the government’s position, Hon. Akandoh emphasized continuity, accountability, and pragmatism. He stressed that the administration would not allow partisan considerations to undermine the delivery of vital health infrastructure.

Instead, it will ensure that resources are allocated efficiently, contractors are engaged responsibly, and projects are completed for the benefit of the Ghanaian people.

With funding secured for key projects such as the La General Hospital, and renewed efforts to complete long-standing projects like the Komfo Anokye maternity block, the Health Minister expressed optimism that the Mahama-led government is on the right track to significantly improve Ghana’s health infrastructure landscape.
