The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has donated medical equipment valued at $1.5 million to the Ga North Municipal Hospital, underscoring the government’s resolve to strengthen healthcare delivery by investing in existing facilities.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Minister explained that the gesture was informed by a surprise visit he paid to the hospital, during which he observed the facility’s struggle to operate without some essential resources.
“What we saw during the visit was a hospital that was doing its best but was clearly handicapped by the absence of critical equipment. We could not ignore that”.

The donation included more than thirty items, ranging from highly specialized machines to basic but indispensable resources. Among the list were anesthesia machines, incubators, nebulizers, ECG machines, steam sterilizers, stethoscopes, hospital beds, delivery sets, and ward screens.
Hon. Akandoh stressed that these items represented a major capital investment in healthcare provision and urged hospital authorities to treat them with the utmost care.

“This equipment is not just an asset; it is a lifeline. I expect the hospital to ensure its proper maintenance and effective use so that it serves the patients for many years to come”.

The Minister further emphasized the centrality of equipment to quality healthcare delivery. He argued that the sector rests on three key pillars: infrastructure, personnel, and equipment.
According to him, focusing only on building new facilities without sustaining the existing ones would be counterproductive.
“Healthcare delivery depends on infrastructure, personnel, and equipment. It is unwise to allow existing facilities to deteriorate while putting all the attention on constructing new ones. This government is determined to strike that balance.”

A Great Relief
For the Ga North Municipal Hospital, the arrival of the equipment marked a turning point in addressing long-standing operational challenges.
The Medical Superintendent, Dr. Victor Caesar, who received the items on behalf of the hospital, expressed deep gratitude to the Minister and the government. He described the donation as a relief for both staff and patients.
“This is a day of joy and genuine relief for us. Some of this equipment, especially the anesthesia machines, have been urgently needed for years. We are delighted that the government has responded to this pressing need”.

He assured the Minister that the hospital would prioritize proper care of the donated equipment, pointing to a well-established culture of maintenance within the facility.

“We are committed to ensuring that every single item is well-maintained and used effectively. Our track record shows that we preserve and maximize medical resources, and we will do the same with these new additions”.

The presentation forms part of a broader government commitment to improving healthcare delivery by not only expanding access through new hospitals but also upgrading existing ones to meet modern standards.
For patients who rely on the Ga North Municipal Hospital, the investment is expected to enhance diagnostic accuracy, improve maternal and child care, and strengthen emergency response capacity.
By channeling resources into equipment that directly impacts patient care, the Ministry of Health is signaling a shift towards ensuring that healthcare facilities are not merely structures, but functioning systems equipped to deliver quality services.
The Minister reiterated that such interventions would continue in other parts of the country as the government works to close the gaps in healthcare infrastructure and resources.

As the Ga North Municipal Hospital begins to integrate the equipment into its operations, the focus will be on ensuring that the investment translates into tangible improvements in patient outcomes.
Both the Ministry of Health and the hospital’s management share the hope that the new resources will usher in a new era of efficiency, reliability, and improved service delivery for the community.
