The Bogoso-Prestea Gold Mine, one of Ghana’s most historic mining concessions, has taken a major step toward revival as the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, paid a working visit to inspect progress on its reopening.

During his visit, the Minister was taken on a guided tour of the mine’s Processing Plant, where ore is processed into gold concentrate. He also interacted with several employees, listening to their perspectives on the ongoing rehabilitation efforts.

Expressing satisfaction with the progress, Hon. Buah commended Heath Goldfields for its investment, innovation, and determination to bring the Bogoso-Prestea Mine back to full productivity.

Accompanied by Mr. Isaac Andrews Tandoh, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, and Mr. Richard Kofi Adjei, Chief Inspector of Mines, the Minister’s tour focused on assessing compliance with Ghana’s mining regulations, environmental standards, and health and safety protocols.

The visit, which marks a significant milestone in Heath Goldfields’ efforts to restore the mine, was seen as both symbolic and practical: a demonstration of government’s oversight role as well as an endorsement of the company’s commitment to sustainable mining.

For the local communities, the Minister’s visit offered reassurance that their concerns will not be overlooked.

In his address, Hon. Buah urged the company to remain attentive to the needs of host communities and to treat community engagement as a core operational principle.

Safety and Sustainability in Focus

The Managing Director of Heath Goldfields, Mr. Patrick Appiah Mensah, used the occasion to outline the company’s priorities since taking over operations in January 2025. He stressed that safety and sustainability had been at the heart of their revival strategy.

“Since taking over in January, our top priority has been safety.

“We’ve stabilized the site, pumped out long-flooded underground workings, and rebuilt critical infrastructure.”

Mr. Appiah Mensah noted that community recruitment and training are well underway, with strict enforcement of compliance measures.

He expressed pride in contributing to the socio-economic development of the region and the nation, adding that visible progress is being made and this marks just the beginning.

He also reaffirmed that the Bogoso-Prestea Mine, which has long been central to the life of the community, will now be operated under a model of responsible mining that integrates environmental stewardship and socio-economic growth.

The reopening of the Bogoso-Prestea Mine is expected to provide a significant boost to local and national development.

Beyond job creation, the company’s community recruitment drive and training programs are intended to build long-term skills in the host communities.

Industry observers note that the successful rehabilitation of the mine will also serve as a model for other dormant concessions across the country, reinforcing the government’s push for responsible mining practices that balance profitability with sustainability.

The presence of the Minerals Commission leadership underscored the regulator’s active role in ensuring that the mine’s reopening complies with all statutory requirements.

Mr. Tandoh and Mr. Adjei reiterated the Commission’s readiness to continue guiding and monitoring the mine’s operations.

In response, Heath Goldfields expressed appreciation for the Ministry’s and Commission’s support, describing it as vital to the mine’s successful revival.

“We deeply appreciate the Minister’s support and the Minerals Commission’s continued guidance.

“Their presence is a powerful reminder of the responsibility we carry and the opportunity we have to make a lasting impact.”

Mr. Patrick Appiah Mensah, Managing Director of Heath Goldfields

As the Bogoso-Prestea Gold Mine edges closer to reopening, stakeholders are optimistic that its revival will symbolize not only industrial renewal but also a turning point for responsible mining in Ghana.

For government, the project demonstrates how collaboration with investors can help transform dormant assets into engines of growth. For Heath Goldfields, it is a chance to prove that mining can be done responsibly, with safety and sustainability as guiding principles.

The coming months will be critical as the company continues rehabilitation, community integration, and compliance efforts. But with the backing of government and regulators, the Bogoso-Prestea Mine is set to once again play a central role in Ghana’s mining landscape.
