DSTV Pricing under scrutiny

Ghanaians who subscribe to DSTV Ghana are set to enjoy significant savings and more entertainment options following a landmark agreement between the government and MultiChoice Africa.

The deal, announced by Minister of Communications Hon. Sam Nartey George, comes after extensive committee deliberations aimed at evaluating DSTV’s pricing and its impact on Ghanaian households.

Addressing the public, Hon. George revealed that the committee considered various factors, including cost structures, Ghana’s macroeconomic environment, and subscription trends, before reaching a decision.

According to him, MultiChoice Africa has committed to an unprecedented move by introducing a special value offer available exclusively in Ghana.

This initiative, which takes effect from October 1, 2025, will provide subscribers with up to 50% more value depending on their subscription package.

“MultiChoice Africa has committed to implementing an unprecedentedly increased value offer only in Ghana, and I repeat, only in Ghana,” Hon. George stated.

He explained that the revised structure will allow subscribers to access higher-tier bouquets without additional charges, making entertainment more affordable and accessible.

Details of the New DSTV Packages

Under the new arrangement, subscribers on the Padi Bouquet, currently priced at GHC 59, will be automatically upgraded to the Access Bouquet, which is valued at GHC 99. This upgrade gives them access to 35 additional channels, representing a 40% savings.

For those subscribed to the Access Bouquet at GHC 99, MultiChoice will bump them up to the Family Bouquet, which ordinarily costs GHC 190. This comes with 19 extra channels and a 48% savings.

Customers on the Family Package will now enjoy access to live football matches as they are upgraded to the Compact Package, which costs GHC 380. This change adds 22 more channels and provides a 50% savings.

“Compact, currently going at GHC 380, gets bumped up automatically to compact plus, which is priced at GHC 570. You get 12 more channels in addition, and the value savings, 33%. Compact plus, valued at GHC 570, you pay that, you’re automatically bumped up to premium, which goes at the price of GHC 865. You get 18 more channels and a value of 34%.”

Hon. Sam Nartey George

Hon. George further announced that subscribers who remain on the Premium Package will continue to enjoy all its exclusive content, but will also be automatically entered into a competition to win fully paid trips to watch selected English Premier League matches.

GHC 555 Decoder Subsidy for New Subscribers

In addition to the value upgrades, MultiChoice Africa will provide a GHC 555 subsidy for the Jakpa decoder and dish kit, reducing the price by 50% for new customers.

This, according to the Minister, will encourage more households to access DSTV services at a lower cost.

The committee plans to reconvene in three months to evaluate the impact of these initiatives and ensure that subscribers continue to benefit while maintaining the sustainability of DSTV services in Ghana.

“Effectively, MultiChoice has offered value over and above what we expected of them. I went into this with a request for 30%, but what we have now is a minimum of 33% and a maximum of 50%.”

Hon. Sam Nartey George

He expressed gratitude to MultiChoice for their goodwill and commitment to supporting Ghanaian families.

Government’s Stand Against Cross-Border Piracy

Beyond pricing reforms, the committee also addressed the long-standing issue of cross-border piracy involving DSTV decoders smuggled from Nigeria into Ghana.

According to Hon. George, this illegal practice has deprived the state of tax revenue, shifted jobs away from Ghana, and harmed the local content creation industry while leaving unsuspecting customers without proper customer support.

To combat this challenge, the committee has recommended the formation of a working group that will include representatives from the Ministry of Communication and Digital Technology, the National Communications Authority (NCA), the Cyber Security Authority, the Ghana Domain Name Registry, the National IT Agency, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, and MultiChoice Ghana.

This task force will develop comprehensive strategies to eliminate piracy and protect the interests of both the state and subscribers.

“The government of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama is on your side, and MultiChoice is a responsible business operating in Ghana. I thank the Ghanaian public for their support and patience on this matter.”

Hon. Sam Nartey George

He added that the new deal will ease financial pressure on households while supporting Ghana’s digital economy.

As the October rollout approaches, Ghanaians can expect a more affordable and rewarding entertainment experience, setting a new benchmark for pay-TV services in the country.
