Birim Central Municipal Intensifies Efforts to Reclaim Galamsey-Affected Lands

The Birim Central Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region is spearheading a concerted effort to reclaim lands that have been degraded by the devastating practice of illegal mining, locally known as “galamsey.”

In a collaborative initiative involving key stakeholder agencies, the municipality is taking decisive steps to rehabilitate the affected areas and promote environmental sustainability.

“As part of continuous efforts to reclaim lands degraded by illegal mining within the Birim Central Municipality, I engaged with Partners of Nature Africa (PONA), the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other key stakeholder agencies to undertake a land reclamation exercise in affected communities.”

During the engagement, all the partners involved reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Assembly’s “environmental recovery agenda.” This collaborative approach underscores the municipality’s recognition that addressing the complex issue of land degradation requires the concerted efforts of various stakeholders, each contributing their expertise and resources to achieve a common goal.

The Municipal in collaboration with other agencies such as NAIMOS has recently adopted a ruthless approach in solving the galamsey menace in the area including the recent crackdown on some illegal mining sites therefore seizing machines i.e excavators, chanfangs,etc.  This reclamation exercise is also the municipal’s further step to have these affected lands restored.
