Key member of the United Party, Mr. Ebo Buckman, has cautioned that the minority members of parliament should not be engaged in open endorsements, as was witnessed on October 23, 2025, when 63 members endorsed former vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
He noted that such actions are not in the best interest of the New Patriotic Party, as they go to undermining efforts at peace building.
He emphasized that such actions, more often than not, constitute a plan to play the minds of the grassroots, especially the delegates.
“I can tell you, some of these MPs, if they try primary, they will lose in their own constituency. So, they are endorsing the candidacy just to show off; I mean, just to play some psychological game on the delegates.”
Ebo Buckman, Deputy National Communication Director, United Party
Mr. Buckman argued that at the moment, the members of parliament are the leaders of the party and ought to be focused on a collective effort at ensuring party unity.

He noted that in the aftermath of the presidential primary, the members of parliament will be the key stakeholders to partner with the flagbearer to prosecute a campaign for the general elections, but with such actions, then how will such members of parliament be able to cooperate with the winning candidate if they happened to have endorsed his opponent?
“The leaders of NPP are those in parliament because they represent the voice of the party in the country at the moment. And so, if you find yourself in this position, I think the most sensible thing you can do is to play a neutral role. Even if you support someone openly, you play a neutral role to ensure that you are going to have some unity in the party.”
Ebo Buckman, Deputy National Communication Director, United Party
He further questions the leadership capabilities of the party, querying how such actions could be taken without any of the leaders allowing it. He stated that this confirms the claims that the party is in crisis.
He also questioned the MPs’ description of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as having “the talent of Danquah, the intellect of Busia and the humility of Dombo.”
“So now they are saying that their party is a three-gate party. And so, the Gas have no future in NPP in terms of ascending to the top position of becoming a leader of the party and possibly president? If you are Ewe, you have no place in NPP?”
Ebo Buckman, Deputy National Communication Director, United Party
Mr. Buckman also questioned the members of parliament’s justification of the actions based on competence and marketability.
He emphasized that when it comes to competence, the former vice president’s track record contradicts the claims of the members of parliament.
“I mean, if it is about the issue of competence, Dr. Bawumia is far away from competence. Given his track record, when he was in charge of the economy, inflation got to 54%. Have you forgotten? When he was in charge of the management of the cedi, we know what happened to the cedi.”
Ebo Buckman, Deputy National Communication Director, United Party
Mr. Buckman emphasized that given that Dr. Bawumia is known for economics, but with how the cedi performed poorly under his watch and the kind of interest rates witnessed, then one cannot assert his competence.

He also noted that when it comes to digitalization, the former vice president’s record is one that cannot back any assertion of his competence, citing the issues with the metric app for the National Service Authority.
After the procurement of the app, which the former vice president is said to have been the brainchild of, he made the promise that there was not going to be any issue of ghost names, but recently the Attorney General has flagged the former Director General and his deputy for having allegedly used ghost names to allegedly ‘loot’ state funds.
With marketability, Mr. Ebo is of the view that, given the Ghanaian ‘political market,’ Dr. Bawumia is not in the best place for the various sects of the Ghanaian society.
“Ghana is a peculiar political market, where you have certain groupings dominating. The Christians dominating, the Akans dominating, the women dominating, the youth dominating.
“So, when you are presenting a candidate and you want to think in terms of marketability, you think in terms of the nature of the market, not the product you are selling.”
Ebo Buckman, Deputy National Communication Director, United Party
He therefore noted that actions of such nature will eventually lead to the destruction of the party, emphasizing that they in the United Party will warmly welcome aggrieved members of the New Patriotic Party.
