SSNIT Pays Over GH¢5 Billion in 2025 — DG Assures Ghanaians of a Strong and Sustainable Trust

SSNIT Pays Over GH¢5 Billion in 2025 — DG Assures Ghanaians of a Strong and Sustainable Trust

SSNIT

As the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) celebrates its 60th anniversary, the Director-General, Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney, has reaffirmed the institution’s financial strength and long-standing commitment to protecting the retirement income of Ghanaians.

Speaking ahead of the anniversary celebration, Mr. Biney announced that the Trust has disbursed over GH¢5 billion in pension payments so far in 2025. This, he said, underscores SSNIT’s unwavering dedication to fulfilling its core mandate of providing income security to retirees across the country.

According to him, despite various economic challenges over the years, SSNIT has remained consistent in meeting its obligations to pensioners without fail. “The institution remains strong. There were challenges, but there were opportunities in there. I inherited challenges and positives, but we worked together to define a strategy for what the future will look like,” he stated.

Mr. Biney highlighted that SSNIT’s success story is built on decades of prudent fund management, effective reforms, and the dedication of its contributors and management team. He noted that SSNIT’s continued ability to pay pensions on time and in full reflects the trust’s operational resilience and financial prudence.

From Three Pensioners to Over 257,000 Beneficiaries

The SSNIT story began in 1965 when the Trust paid pensions to just three beneficiaries. Sixty years later, the institution now serves more than 257,000 pensioners every month, a growth trajectory that signifies Ghana’s expanding social security coverage and the increasing confidence in SSNIT’s system.

“This year alone, we paid in excess of five billion cedis in pensions. Is it sustainable? The Trust will continue to evolve, we will continue to make it stronger, and we’ll put in systems to ensure that we never fail.”

Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney

He emphasized that SSNIT’s achievements are not merely financial but also social. For thousands of Ghanaian retirees, SSNIT represents dignity and stability in retirement. The monthly pension payments provide not only income but also a sense of assurance that their years of hard work continue to yield benefits even after active service.

Clarifying how the pension system works, Mr. Biney reiterated that SSNIT operates a defined benefit scheme, a model that guarantees pensions based on contributions and years of service. Under this scheme, pensions are guaranteed by law and backed by government oversight.

“This is a defined benefit scheme, so it’s one that we have to pay. It’s what the government even has to guarantee as well. So there’s nothing like the Trust will fail, for which reason people’s pensions will be in jeopardy.”

Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney

This assurance comes at a time when discussions about pension sustainability and fund management have gained national attention. The SSNIT boss explained that the Trust continues to adopt innovative investment strategies to maintain the balance between security and returns. He added that prudent investment decisions are guided by a long-term vision of sustainability to ensure that future generations of pensioners also benefit from the scheme.

Strengthening Reforms and Expanding Coverage

Mr. Biney reaffirmed SSNIT’s commitment to transparency, good governance, and continuous reforms aimed at expanding coverage, especially among workers in the informal sector. He noted that many Ghanaians still operate outside the formal social security system, leaving a significant portion of the working population without reliable retirement protection.

To address this, SSNIT has intensified its outreach and sensitization campaigns, encouraging self-employed individuals, artisans, and traders to register and contribute regularly. “I would encourage all Ghanaians to sign up to the scheme. It’s important, and as we say at SSNIT, ‘fa wo daakye personal’—take your future seriously. Let’s win together,” Mr. Biney urged.

These initiatives, he explained, are part of the broader agenda to strengthen Ghana’s social protection system and ensure that every worker, irrespective of occupation or income level, has access to a secure retirement plan.

A Legacy of Trust and Future Commitment

As SSNIT celebrates six decades of service, the institution stands as a pillar of financial security for millions of Ghanaian workers and retirees. Through continuous reforms, technological advancements, and improved customer service, the Trust aims to remain relevant in a rapidly changing financial environment.

Mr. Biney acknowledged that while the journey has not been without challenges, SSNIT’s story is one of resilience, transformation, and collective responsibility. He stressed that maintaining the sustainability of the fund requires active participation from all stakeholders—government, employers, and workers alike.

“Our goal is to build a stronger, more inclusive SSNIT that continues to serve every Ghanaian worker with transparency and integrity. We will keep innovating and improving to ensure that the next 60 years are even more impactful than the first.”

Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney

For the countless Ghanaians who depend on SSNIT for their daily survival after retirement, the Director-General’s assurance offers renewed confidence that the Trust will continue to deliver on its promise—ensuring that every contributor can retire with dignity and peace of mind.
