Former University of Ghana SRC President, Maradona Yeboah Adjei, known in showbiz as Guru NKZ, has revealed how his leadership and student advocacy efforts led to a major win for students.
In an interview, the rapper revealed that under his leadership, he secured a 50% reduction in traditional hall fees, with the help of Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu.
He explained that his team fought relentlessly against what they saw as an unfair hike in hall fees, which had been increased from GH¢2,000 to GH¢3,000, placing extra financial pressure on students and parents.
“We fought the system. We petitioned every level of authority, right up to the Minister of Education. With the intervention of Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, we secured a 50% reduction. It had never happened before, that was a real victory for students.”
Guru
Guru described the achievement as one of the defining milestones of his time in office, adding that it proved the power of student activism when guided by purpose and persistence. “This is the first time someone from showbiz represented the entire student body. It set a precedent showing that artists, too, can lead, inspire, and influence policy in meaningful ways,” he said.
Guru Sounds Alarm Over Rising Sexual Deviance Among Ghanaian Youth

The Ghanaian rapper raised concerns over escalating cases of sexual deviance among youth, attributing part of the crisis to the widespread availability of pornography in the country.
He affirmed, noting that the rates were increasing. This, he said, was the motivation behind his song “Ashawo.”
“It’s increasing. We are hearing cases of teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases rising. That is why I did my song Ashawo, to warn the youth to stop. It’s not good.”
Guru
Guru went on to blame easily accessible pornographic sites as a major contributor.
“Even in Ghana, pornography consumption is too high. I saw a list where a porn site was one of the most visited sites in the country. Meanwhile, Bible apps and many educational sites are available. Why are they watching porn?”
Guru
He appealed to the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the relevant minister to step in and block access to such websites, pointing to countries like Dubai as examples of stringent regulation.
“I am calling on those in charge, the NCA and directors who can just block all harmful sites in the country. Other countries do that, Dubai, for example. It’s not something that requires much deliberation; our leaders can shut down all porn sites immediately if they want. They can’t pretend they aren’t seeing it. It means they don’t have the willpower.”

Guru Declares Tenure Readied Him for Leadership

The Ghanaian rapper and outgoing University of Ghana Student Representative Council (UGSRCSRC) president declared that his tenure has adequately prepared him for leadership at the national level.
He emphasised that one must first prove capability through education and experience before taking on significant roles.
“If you want to venture into a new business or job, or role, you have to show proof that you know what the work is about and that you can do it. The experience is also necessary. That is why people go to school before applying for jobs: to prove that they can do the work.”
Guru
The UG SRC President pointed to the many Ghanaian presidents, MPs, and ministers who began their leadership journeys in student politics, asserting that his time at Legon has taught him a lot about the democratic process.
“From what we have seen, anyone who can be the SRC president of the University of Ghana can rule Ghana, any day, anytime. The majority of our ministers and MPs were heavily involved in school politics. That is why they are good at their duties. They garnered the experience.
“So, even I, going to the university and being the SRC president, helped me learn endurance, tolerance, and understanding the process of leadership.”
Guru
Guru, who studied political science and information studies, declared, “So, for me, after successfully leading the SRC of Legon, I can lead Ghana or any position in Ghana without struggle.”
