The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially initiated constitutional processes to expel Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, following his explosive public denunciation of the party’s current leadership.
In a formal statement by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party described Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng’s recent comments – in which he labeled the NPP as “fake,” and alleged that the 2023 presidential primary was rigged – as highly reprehensible and a direct threat to the party’s internal cohesion.
“The Party unequivocally rejects Professor Frimpong-Boateng’s unfortunate characterisation of the NPP and firmly denies his baseless and unsubstantiated allegations regarding the conduct of the 2023 Presidential Primary.
“The said primary has been widely acknowledged by all candidates who participated, as well as by well-meaning members of the Party, as having been conducted in a free, fair, transparent, and credible manner”

The move marks a dramatic falling out between the party and one of its most prominent elders.
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng had claimed in a television interview that the current iteration of the NPP no longer represents the democratic ideals of its founding fathers, asserting that he no longer identifies with the “virtual,” version of the party he sees today.
He further alleged that the process which produced former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the 2024 flagbearer was marred by bribery and the “twisting of delegates’ arms.”
However, in defending its integrity, party leadership maintained that the internal election was a benchmark for transparency in Ghanaian politics. They argued that the Professor’s claims of manipulation are not only unsubstantiated but are strategically timed to undermine the party as it prepares for its next critical internal contest on January 31, 2026.
The NPP leadership insisted that the Professor’s public admission that he is no longer a member of the “fake party,” provides sufficient grounds for his formal removal from the register.
Reckoning And Party Discipline
The invocation of the party’s constitution for expulsion is a process usually reserved for extreme cases of disloyalty.

Under the newly amended NPP constitution, which was overhauled in late 2025 to strengthen administrative discipline, the party has the mandate to expel members whose public utterances bring the organization into disrepute.
The General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, noted that the party has already commenced the “necessary processes” to ensure that the expulsion follows the letter of the law.
For many within the NPP, the Professor’s criticism was the final straw in a long-standing tension that began during the fallout of the 2021 cabinet reshuffle and the subsequent investigations into illegal mining (galamsey).
“We will not allow the baseless claims of one individual to derail the unity we have built over decades,” the statement read. For the party’s rank and file, the focus remains on the upcoming January 31 primary, where Dr. Bawumia is seeking to consolidate his leadership.
The expulsion of Prof. Frimpong-Boateng signals a significant shift in the internal power dynamics of the NPP. By taking a hardline stance against an elder of his stature, the Kodua-led executive is sending a message that no individual – regardless of their historical contribution – is above the party’s rules.
The “fake party” narrative, which the Professor used to describe the transition from the Kufuor-era values to the current administration, has been flatly rejected by the party as a distortion of reality.

“The Party unequivocally rejects Professor Frimpong-Boateng’s unfortunate characterisation. ‘This is the beginning of corruption?’ No. This is a beginning of a new era of discipline where the party’s interests come before any individual’s ego. We are moving forward with those who believe in the real NPP”

As the NPP moves toward its end-of-month primary, the fallout from this expulsion is expected to dominate the political discourse. The party urged its members to remain focused and to ignore what it terms as the “bitter rhetoric of former members.”
